4 Things You Can Do to Strengthen Your Marriage in November

Yikes—the holidays are quickly approaching, and with busy schedules, tons of travel and stretched-thin budgets, keeping your marriage thriving isn’t exactly number one on your to-do list. But here’s why it should be: The more time and energy you spend on your partner during the holidays, the more likely you’ll be to stay on the same page, avoid arguments and miscommunication, and enjoy the season together. Here are four little ways to keep your relationship strong.

Have Dinner Together, Just the Two of You

Carve out time to do this once a week—no TV, kids or phones. Don’t worry about all those billions of things you have to do. The laundry can wait a few more hours. You can finish your work project tomorrow. Just remember, when your life is swirling with chaos, your S.O. is your rock, your best ally and your number-one fan. (And vice versa, of course.) Just focus on each other, laugh and enjoy some takeout and wine.

Hammer Out a Holiday Budget

OK, it’s definitely not at the top of your list of fun things to do in November, but hear us out. Take half an hour (that’s it) to lay all your credit card statements out on the dining room table and figure out the budget you’ll be working with from now until the end of the year. When you know exactly how much extra cash you’ll have for decorations, gifts and travel, you’ll easily stay on the same page when you start putting those plans into motion. (Your daughter probably won’t be getting that pony she wanted for Christmas, but she’ll get over it.)

Forgive One Moment of Frustration

This is a tough time of year, and holiday demands can transform even the calmest and coolest into a big ball of stress. Chances are, your partner is going to feel the strain at one point or another this month. Your goal? To remember this and give them one “Get Out of Jail Free” card. Best of all, if you stay your supportive self when they accidentally fly off the handle, they’re more apt to do the same for you when you have a meltdown.

Take One Annoying Holiday To-Do Off Their List

Does your husband always make the turkey for Thanksgiving dinner, but this year seems a little too overextended? Volunteer to buy, brine and prep the bird, so all he has to do is jump in and do his thing. (Or even better, point him in the direction of PureWow’s Thanksgiving Dinner in Two Hours or Less.) Teamwork makes the dream work, people.
