This $4.5 Million Mid-Century Home in Austin, Texas, Has Been Refreshed for Modern Life

While some only visit Austin, Texas, for a weekend to get in on its comfort foods, legendary music scene, and special events like SXSW, others have been flocking to the city since 2021 to take up permanent residence. As a result, home prices in and around Austin have skyrocketed. Last fall, an award-winning modernist mansion hit the market for $12.5 million, and now another modern marvel is up for grabs, but we’ll let you decide whether its skyline views are worth the $4.2 million price tag.

Acclaimed architect W.R. Coleman built the Bat City pad, located in the Highland Park West neighborhood, in 1958. Local architect Jim Susman of STG Design later redesigned the home.

Four bedrooms and three bathrooms (plus two powder rooms) are found in its 4,224 square feet of living space. Raise Design is behind the landscaping surrounding the home that’s fixed on a half-acre lot that grants stunning vistas of Lake Austin and the Austin skyline. Wade Giles of Douglas Elliman holds the listing.

A light-filled entry foyer welcomes you into the mid-century modern abode, flushed with wooden features like white oak floors and exposed wood-beam ceilings. The spacious nearby living room is anchored by a wood-burning fireplace that is flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows that allow the space to be filled with natural light and provide panoramic views of the home’s terraced gardens.

The one-of-a-kind kitchen is located just behind the space with Taj Mahal quartzite and high-end appliances that include a gas range stovetop and two ovens. At first glance, the wooden details, from the cabinets to the floors and the slanted ceiling design, appear excessive. But the material’s polish keeps it from feeling dated or overwhelmingly log cabin-ish. Elsewhere, you can find an office with tall windows, along with a couple sitting rooms, one of which includes a makeshift fitness area and access to the rooftop terrace.

Although spacious, the most interesting things about the upstairs primary bedroom are its views of downtown Austin and the ensuite bathroom. Wooden details carry over to the bath’s cabinets and closet, while the standalone bath tub gives the space a bit of character. A guest suite on the lower level is also large enough to be used as a primary suite—the choice is yours.

Other perks of shacking up at the residence are being in close proximity to the Texas capital’s top attractions, like the Circuit of Americas and McKinney Falls State Park. Austin City Limits is also revered for its live-music events and has showcased legends like B.B. King and Willie Nelson, in case you’re up for a brew and a two-step.
