When was the last time you looked at your printer and thought it was fun? Personally, it was probably when I was a kid printing off coloring pages I found online. For many of us, though, the printer has been a functional device used at home for printing legal, medical, and work-related documents, along with the occasional set of directions.

Luckily, this is 2023, and we now have 3D printers that can print you cooler things than documents (not to take away from the necessity of laser and inkjet printers, of course). For those looking to try their hand at making prototypes or artwork and/or creating their own toys, figurines, or desk ornaments, a 3D printer is a nice device to have around. And while they can be quite pricey, one of our editors’ favorites is on sale right now for well under $1,000.

Right now, you can grab the AnkerMake M5 3D Printer for 30 percent off on Amazon. While that might not sound like a huge discount, it does mean that this nearly $800 3D printer is currently available for about $560.

We here at Popular Mechanics recently released our 2023 Gadget Awards, and on that list is this AnkerMake 3D printer. Listed as the best 3D printer in the “Smart Home” category, this AnkerMake model stood out to our editors in part for how simple it is to use, as well as how quickly it works. The brand highlights the latter feature, noting that it now has a speed of 500 millimeters per second when you upgrade your system to PowerBoost 2.0.

Because of how easy this model is to assemble and use, it makes for a particularly solid option for those new to the 3D printer game. “It streamlines the tedious preparation thanks to its ability to calibrate itself across 49 grid points, and automatically optimizes the scale of 3D object files,” our editors wrote about the AnkerMake M5 in the Gadget Awards. “This gives the printing process a level of press-and-play simplicity that’s been sorely missing. Just tap on its touchscreen or send a file to it, and you can create a figure as easily as you would print a paper document.”

Test editor Hunter Fenollol reviewed the printer last year and noted that the AnkerMake M5 3D Printer “is the first printer that truly almost anyone can just pick up and start using.” So for those who've been considering trying their hand at 3D printing at home, we highly recommend snagging the AnkerMake M5 3D Printer to play with while it’s under $600 on Amazon.
