The $37.5 Million Foxhill Estate in San Diego is One of La Jolla’s Largest and Most Historic Properties

Once you step foot on the grounds of Foxhill Estate, you may never want to leave. And it’s easy to see why. Built in 1959 by James Copley, the former publisher and journalist at the San Diego Union-Tribune, Foxhill Estate is considered one of the largest contiguous residential properties in La Jolla, an upscale seaside community within San Diego. During their residency, the Copely family held high-society gatherings and dinner parties; indeed, James and his wife, Helen, once hosted President Richard Nixon at the home.

Akin to a private country club or a lavish boutique hotel, the 30-acre gated spread is enveloped in lush gardens, towering trees, and formal orchards. The enchanting property features a 17,000-square-foot, ten-bedroom, 14-bathroom home; a pool pavilion; an eight-car garage; a greenhouse; a fitness center; and a pitching area and putting green.

Numerous crystal chandeliers add glitz to the French-inspired eat-in kitchen.

The sprawling estate is perched atop a hill overlooking all of La Jolla and the ocean. Its hilltop location also means it is exceptionally private. In 1959, the Copley family tapped architect Drew Roy to create the French-inspired main residence, which has been extensively renovated over the past few decades. Still, much of Roy’s handiwork remains in place, including the dormer windows, mansard-style roof, and brick cladding.

Each room is just as sumptuous as the last, made with the finest materials and finishes. There are gleaming marble halls, ornate detailing, classical embellishments, and grand living spaces. An opulent spiral mahogany staircase connects the first and second floors, while the regal living room has polished mahogany floors, two separate seating areas, and French doors that open to the back patio.

The pool is complemented by a spacious pavilion.

A wood-paneled library/office is warmed by a fireplace, and the huge eat-in kitchen, centered around a marble-topped island, is dressed up with crystal chandeliers. Elsewhere, there’s a formal dining room, a second, more casual dining room with a bar, a family room, and a game room.

The homeowner’s suite is like its own duplex apartment, spanning two floors connected by a second spiral mahogany staircase and capped by a gilt-trimmed ceiling. The gallery that encircles the second floor of the double-height primary bedroom has lighted built-in display cases and plenty of wall space for displaying large-scale artworks. There are also many terraces with sweeping ocean views.

“Foxhill Estate is the most prestigious property for sale in San Diego,” says listing agent Ross Clark of Compass. “It offers 270-degree ocean views, including views overlooking La Jolla Country Club. For the sports enthusiast, the compound includes a fitness center, pool, spa, tennis court, racquetball court, and pickleball court, and for the outdoor enthusiast, the property is home to ample walking trails, formal orchards, cutting gardens, and acres of which to enjoy incredible views of the Pacific. There is nothing like this available for sale.”
