Ingredient percentage: Serums tend to contain higher percentages of active ingredients than other skin care ingredients, explains Dr. Engelman, so they are able to better target specific skin concerns. In general, serums with lower ingredient percentages will be gentler, and ones with higher percentages will be stronger. If you’re sensitive, start with the lowest available percentage to avoid irritation.
Price: Although they’re typically more expensive than other skin care staples like moisturizer and sunscreen, face serums are not a waste of money. Because these products contain a concentrated dose of ingredients, they’re investment pieces. Inexpensive serums likely include a lower quality version of the ingredient, so this is one category to splurge on. You typically only need two to three drops of serum to cover your complexion, so they’ll last you a good month or two with twice daily use.
Consistency: Lightweight options are best for max absorption into your skin. Dr. Engelman says to look for serums that have a thin, gel-like consistency, versus ones that feel oily. A watery consistency usually indicates that the formula contains molecules small enough to penetrate your skin, according to Dr. Luke.
Packaging: Some serums contain ingredients that degrade quickly when exposed to oxygen and light. Vitamin C serums are notoriously quick to oxidize, so look for options packaged in airless pumps or dark tinted glass to ensure the active ingredient retains its potency. Store your serums somewhere cool and away from sunlight, like the medicine cabinet, to keep them fresh.
The Different Types of Face Serums
Face Serums for Acne: Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) treat acne by clearing your pores. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. For persistent acne, go with a retinoid serum. These vitamin A derivatives increase cell turnover to prevent dead cells from clogging your pores. Retinoids have the added benefit of preventing acne scars from forming, too.
Face Serums for Dull Skin: Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic acid and glycolic acid deliver gentle exfoliation that will dust off dead cells to reveal a brighter, fresher-looking complexion. These serums are best used at night, as they can make your skin sensitive to sunlight. Always wear sunscreen after using an AHA.
Face Serums for Dry Skin: Hyaluronic acid serums are a great choice for boosting moisture, according to Dr. Garshick. The ingredient can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water; apply it on slightly damp skin to quench your complexion. Glycerin is a great option, too — it helps to pull moisture into your skin.
Face Serums for Wrinkles: Retinoids to the rescue. The ingredient is the gold-standard for all things anti-aging: By increasing your skin’s collagen production, retinoids help to plump your skin from the inside out. You won’t see results overnight, but with consistent use your fine lines and wrinkles will soften.
Face Serums for Sensitive Skin: Calming ingredients are key. Look for ingredients like CBD, calendula, allantoin, and vitamin B5 to help reset your skin. Also consider gentler alternatives to retinoids and antioxidants — bakuchiol and Kakadu plum deliver similar benefits brightening and firming benefits without irritation.
Face Serums for Redness: Niacinamide is the name of the game. The ingredient reduces inflammation to quell redness — look for a low concentration to avoid irritation. You can also try plant-based ingredients like chamomile, cucumber extract, aloe, and colloidal oatmeal to calm red skin.
Face Serums for Dark Spots: You can find a number of options that help fade dark spots. Antioxidant-rich serums with ingredients like Vitamin C help your skin manage UV-induced free radicals to treat dark spots and pigmentation. You can also find ingredients like tranexamic acid that prevent pigmentation from forming — a great choice to cycle in during summertime. Niacinamide is also a powerful agent for decreasing pigmentation.
Are Face Serums Safe to Use?
Barring any skin conditions like eczema or rosacea, serums are generally safe to use (those with skin conditions should always ask their dermatologist before trying something new). If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test of the product on the inside of your forearm to see if you experience any adverse side effects like redness, flaking, or irritation.
Once you’ve followed those precautions, it’s all about choosing the right formula for your skin type and skin concerns so you don’t agitate your skin. For example, Dr. Engelman recommends that people with sensitive skin avoid irritating ingredients, such as retinol and strong alpha-hydroxy acids. Dr. Garshick adds that irritating ingredients might lead to more redness, dryness, and sensitivity, and if your serum causes even more problems (rather than reducing them), she says to discontinue use and just skip a serum altogether.
While you can combine certain serums, like hyaluronic acid and retinol, it’s best to start with just one serum at a time. This way, you’ll be able to slowly introduce the ingredient to your skin without causing irritation. Some stronger serums (like beta-hydroxy acids and retinol) shouldn’t be used at the same time. You can always check with your dermatologist if you have concerns about combining different treatments.
How To Apply Face Serum
Once you’ve picked the best face serum for your skin type and what skin concerns you want to treat, it’s important to know how to use it. A skin care routine generally has several steps to layer products based on the formula’s specific consistency. A good rule of thumb is to use your lightest products first and end with your heavier creams.
Serum is meant to be used after cleansing but before moisturizing, says Dr. Garshick. But if you have an essence or toner in your routine, she says to use those on first, followed by a serum, to ensure maximum penetration of the serum’s key ingredients.
Dr. Engelman recommends applying a serum to a damp face. Depending on the product’s packaging, you’ll pump out or use the dropper to put product into your hands and rub together to distribute product evenly then gently pat the product all around your face. She says to let it set for at least a minute before you apply other skin care products on top.
Serums can also be used at different points throughout the day, according to Dr. Garshick. She says that some products, like serums with vitamin C, are designed to protect skin during the day while others, like a retinol or acid-based serum, are more beneficial for a nighttime routine. Serums intended to calm or hydrate skin can work both during the day and night. When used at night, Dr. Garshick says you’ll wake up with healthy skin that looks and feels refreshed.
