Here's When Women Were First Allowed To Compete In 32 Olympic Sports, And It’s Honestly Mind-Boggling

Women first participated in the Olympics in 1900, but, even then, they had only three options: tennis, golf, and sailing. It wasn't until this year's games that women made up almost half of the athletes competing.

Here are all of the Olympic sports that women weren't always allowed to compete in — and when it was finally allowed:

1.1900: Golf, tennis, and sailing

2.1904: Archery

3.1912: Swimming and diving

4.1924: Fencing

Ellen Osiier was the first female champion of Olympic fencing, competing for Denmark. She later went undefeated in the rest of her Olympic matches and remains the only person in Danish history to win a gold medal in this sport.

5.1928: Athletics and gymnastics

7.1952: Cross-country skiing and equestrian

Lydia Wideman (pictured left) was the first female Olympic medalist in cross-country skiing and at the time of her death in 2019, she was the oldest living Olympian. Lis Hartel (pictured right) won the silver medal for the newly co-ed equestrian dressage competition, despite being paralyzed from the knees down after contracting polio.
