Over 30 years ago, in 1993, physician and co-founder of HCA Healthcare, Dr. Thomas Frist Jr., shelled out a whopping $2.2 million for a large piece of property in Nashville’s ultra-exclusive Belle Meade neighborhood.

The billionaire businessman, along with his late wife Patricia, spent close to a decade custom-building a sprawling trophy estate. “Building this house was a labor of love for his wife,” broker Steve Fridrich of Fridrich & Clark Realty told the WSJ. “Her signature is all through that house.”

Following Patricia’s passing in 2021, the couple’s longtime home first hit the market in 2022 with an optimistic asking price of $50 million. Now, having just been sold for a hefty $32 million, the estate has set a new record as the state’s most expensive home. The previous record for the priciest real estate transaction in the state was set in 2010 when country music star Alan Jackson took in $28 million on the sale of a vast estate near the Old Natchez Country Club in Franklin.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a trust tied to Christopher R. Redlich Jr., a retired shipping executive who also lives in Tennessee, purchased the palatial Frist property.

The brick-clad mansion was originally completed in 2001 by award-winning New York architects Ferguson & Shamamian, and they tapped legendary designer Bunny Williams for the interiors. Altogether, the Southern-style abode measures an impressive 19,811 square feet and features five bedrooms and 10 bathrooms, plus a powder room.

Curious about what else the most expensive home in the Volunteer State gets you? Well, the ultra-opulent dwelling comes with a wood-paneled library, its own gym, a country kitchen, and a spacious recreation room. In terms of the decor, think Southern elegance, with tons of exposed beams, vaulted ceilings, sparkling crystal chandeliers, a large floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, and hand-painted wallpaper. Of course, the home sports a few modern comforts, too, including an elevator.

Outside, the expansive 50-acre grounds comprise a tennis court, a swimming pool, a guest cottage, a gazebo, and a spacious six-car garage.

Interestingly, when the manse was hoisted onto the market two years ago, it had an extra 10-acre parcel of land baked into the asking price. Recently, the listing was split into two, and according to the newspaper, the sale of the abode did not include the separate ten-acre building site. That plot is still up for grabs.

Dr. Frist will reportedly be downsizing to a smaller home close by.
