Trends change with the seasons, and this year we’re seeing a ton of exciting styles. From rich neutrals and bright reds to peplum silhouettes that are making a comeback, you can expect to see an array of frocks that are flowy, vibrant, versatile and tailored. The Tomato Girl summer hasn’t sizzled off this fall, but as PureWow fashion editor Abby Hepworth mentions, “Brown was a surprising trend with which to kick off 2023, but it’s only become more popular as the year goes on. And now it’s been joined by other rich hues like cream, dark green, gray, butter yellow and caramel.” Basically, you’ll want to opt for luxurious neutrals that can stand the test of time in your closet. We’re also seeing a lot of voluminous puff sleeves and ruffled trim dresses, as celebrity fashion expert and TV host Cindy Conroy previously told us. And mini and midi dresses aren’t going anywhere anytime this season, so shop accordingly.

2. The Soren Long-Sleeve Shirt Dress by Maeve
Shirt dresses are always a good idea, especially come fall when the temps fluctuate from hot to cold like the flip of a switch. This seasonless tunic by Maeve has one working pocket on the chest and is made from a lightweight cotton that’s ultra-breathable so you won’t break a sweat while in those long sleeves. We also love how versatile it is when it comes to styling. One Anthropologie reviewer says, “I’ve worn [it] belted or unbelted and have gotten so many compliments. Seems intentionally oversized, so [it] definitely is on the larger end. [And it’s] comfortable but looks polished enough to wear to work, especially when belted.” We couldn’t agree more. On or off the court, this Nike tennis dress serves in our book. Remember that fall dresses don’t have to be all fancy-shmancy gowns. When it comes to athleisure options, Nike does it best. This sweat-wicking dress has the faintest sheer mesh panels above the hips and along the back surrounding a small cutout, so you can stay cool and have some ventilation as you run to the kids’ soccer practices and grocery store. Designed to hug your body, this dress is fitted up top and has a supremely supportive racerback detailing. And under the mesh, the skirt flares slightly off the body, adding a free-flowing movement along your legs. We also can’t get over the contoured scoop along the sides of the legs.

In fact, it’s a PureWow reader favorite, undoubtedly because of its flattering silhouette, ruched bodice, tiered skirt, square neckline (that’ll look great on bigger boobs, too) and puff short sleeves, all which make us want to frolic to and fro. It’s even available in a mini babydoll version ($80) if you want to show off a bit more leg. Oh, and the best part? It has the pockets. Who says dresses can’t be functional, too?
6. Daily Practice by Anthropologie Turtleneck Side-Slit Dress
“I’ve been on the hunt for a lightweight, flattering, high-quality turtleneck dress in a light color,” writes one Anthropologie reviewer, “and this is the best I’ve found so far. The fabric is thinner, so the dress hugs the body beautifully and I love the length, neckline and sleeves. It’s so chic! Perfect under a wool coat or on its own.” When we think of fall dresses, we think cozy, soft and, quite frankly, whatever will be most comfortable for when we go apple picking with the fam. And while we love our leggings, this number is a great option for when we’ve grown sick of them and desperately need to run a load of laundry. It has a slightly roomy turtleneck that’ll look great with some layered necklaces, and it has fitted long sleeves to keep you warm. Are you sensing a theme here? We can never have too many fall turtlenecks. It’s all we want to live in once the weather cools off, and this chic Pomander Place mini ticks off all the boxes. Not only is the neutral hazelwood a beautiful shade for fall, but the slightly boxy silhouette, three-quarter sleeves and relaxed turtleneck add just the right amount of character to this mini. The fabric even has the slightest shimmer, per the brand, making it a chic option when you want to be casual and elegant. “I found myself wearing the first one so much that I ordered another,” says one reviewer. “It washes well and doesn't hold wrinkles [and] is warm enough to layer with tights, a shirt underneath and scarf on the coldest days, or pair with bare legs on days that are a bit warmer. Don’t be fooled by the sweetness of this airy, crinkled poplin midi dress. Reviewers can’t get enough of its understated sexy appeal with features like a V-neck and small circular cinched cutout at the chest that helps it fit well across your boobs and is secured by a delicate tie closure. If you have big boobs, listen-up! One reviewer was thrilled to find a dress that fit her chest, raving, “If you have a larger chest, you will love the fit! The plunging neckline and peep hole puts it in the sexy category without running a try-hard look. I’m 5’4”, 140 [pounds and a] D cup. [It’s] very fitted in the chest and top torso, then [has a] nice A-line all the way down. And…it has pockets! Finally, a dress that doesn’t look like a tent or a second skin. If you ask us, autumn isn’t complete without an orange dress. We love this Free People number from Revolve because it’s not too on-the-nose for fall, though it does match our pumpkin spice latte so well. It has an unconventional blazer-like wrap style that’s extremely lightweight thanks to that sateen fabric. One happy customer writes, “I felt so effortlessly sexy and sophisticated in this that I got it in orange and black! The medium (my usual size) was a bit big so I went with the small. For me, Free People typically runs a little large, so this was not surprising. I'm 5'4" and I loved that it was a little short, especially because the top part is modest. I did use a safety pin to secure the top part so that my bra would not show.” If you couldn’t tell from the picture, it has a subtle snake print all over the fabric that’ll look so sleek at the next happy hour gathering.

According to reviewers, the thick material has some stretch to it, and it features an elegant, dropped shoulder and wide, voluminous sleeve that makes it feel relaxed yet elevated enough to wear when you host a dinner party. Due to its stretchy nature and roomy sleeves, some customers note that this can run slightly big, but that’s nothing a size down can’t fix.

It’s in that same beautiful shade of brown that I’m sure will be everywhere this fall, and it’s made with that same weighted and thick cotton fabric that was both breathable and sturdy enough to withstand a breeze. And in true SNDYS fashion, it has a smocked waist that I can confirm gives and stretches easily. But what really sold me about this dress—besides the fact that it has the classiest fit—is the gorgeous back cut-out detail that shows just the right amount of skin.”

If you’re looking for a simple, everyday dress that’ll fit you like a glove, look no further. This ribbed fabric is thick, not see-through and washes like a champ, per reviews. It also has a great amount of stretch that you’d hope to find in a ribbed dress, plus it has a becoming scoop neck that frames your décolletage and gives you ample room to dress it up with your beloved stack of necklaces. All this dress needs is the Jenni Kayne Cocoon cardigan our PureWow editors can’t get enough of and this autumnal ‘fit is complete.

“This fall, I’ll be showing a lot of bare shoulders and wearing lots and lots of knits,” declares Meraz. “Between this off-the-shoulder knit number and the sexy Reformation Eveline knit dress I purchased last week, it’s the only style I’ll be wearing, really. It’s made with a lightweight, soft and stretchy jersey that I know will hug my body so well, accentuating the little curves I do have—so, I can only imagine how stunning this will look on a curvy figure or mama-to-be who wants to show off her baby bump. And there’s nothing more annoying to me than when an off-the-shoulder dress can’t actually sit still (nobody needs to be lifting their dress up a million times a day), but this dress looks like it lays firmly against your chest without falling down or riding up.”

We’ve seen a lot of Barbiecore recently, and while we’re hoping to say goodbye to the bright Pepto Bismol pinks, we’ve agreed to let a muted, soft pink run its course this fall, as in this feminine and flirty tea dress from ASOS. This classic satin number is easy to dress up with a pair of heels or down with a pair of cool sneakers. It has a floral design throughout that incorporates hints of deep green, and the drapey fabric is naturally glossy and silky-smooth against your skin. Our favorite detail has to be the lace-up crisscross back detail, which you can tie to your liking and let the strings drape dramatically down your back.
16. Pomander Place Khaki Finley Flutter Sleeve Dress
ICYDK, this Pomander Place beauty is a PureWow reader-favorite dress, and we totally get why. This flirty frock is the perfect neutral shade of beige for fall, has the most darling oversize flutter sleeves and the classiest V-neckline that isn’t too plunge-forward. We also can’t help but obsess over the boxy fit that complements the mini silhouette so well. As if that wasn’t enough to convince us to add to cart, it has a hem that runs slightly longer along the back, making what would normally be a slightly risqué mini dress a modest outfit that you can wear whenever. Come the brisk weather, you can add some tights and loafers or boots to keep warm while you enjoy that bruschetta and wine al fresco.
17. COS Linen-Blend Mini Bustier Dress
Just because it’s about to get chillier doesn’t mean you have to put away sleeveless styles until spring. In fact, strapless clothes are having a major moment right now, and if you want to make this more office- or cold weather-appropriate, add a tissue-thin long-sleeve tee underneath this dress or toss a light jacket over top to keep warm. “Come fall, I'd wear it with an oversize button-down, scrunched-up socks and loafers for daytime, then copy the website’s styling and pair it with flared pants for night,” says PureWow wellness director Sarah Stiefvater. 21. Zara Linen Blend Polka Dot Midi Dress
“I’ve been on the hunt for THAT Pretty Woman dress for what seems like my whole entire life,” says Meraz. “You know the one Julia Roberts wears when she accompanies Richard Gere to the horse races. And this Zara polka dot dress comes close to the real deal. It has the belt detailing that cinches the waist in, much like Vivienne’s did in the movie, and I also prefer that this one has short, cuffed sleeves—unlike the original, which was sleeveless—since I feel more comfortable when my wide shoulders are covered. And it has pockets, people...so does that make this one better than the original?” We’ll let you decide for yourselves. In addition to Meraz’s favorite things, this Zara dress features buttons down the face of the frock and front darts that make the waist appear smaller.

PureWow’s assistant commerce editor Natalie LaBarbera has her eye on “this cute little sweatshirt dress that feels like a fall version of the usual exercise dresses.” Made with a cotton and recycled polyester blend, this relaxed dress has functional pockets and purportedly feels buttery soft against your skin, just like your favorite sweatshirt. The dress is constructed with a three-quarter zip that can transform the relaxed collar into a loose turtleneck if zipped all the way, plus it has a darling drop-waist. The blue is such a flattering hue on a ton of complexions and the short, flowy sleeves make for a comfortable wear. There’s even a sexy slit that will show off your legs as you walk. Our only qualm with this is that it’s not lined, but luckily the loud print will distract from the thin fabric.
24. Quince Tencel Rib Knit Maxi Slip Dress
Your fall wardrobe is not complete without a sleek, silky slip dress. Good news: Quince has a gorgeous midi dress made from 100 percent mulberry silk that’s washable and great for layering. A true bias cut, this dress will drape off your body and feel so soft against your skin because of that lightweight fabric. According to the brand, the, “silk fiber contains 18 kinds of amino acids that make it amazing for skin nourishment, hypo-allergenic and naturally thermoregulating to help maintain body temperature.” Oh, and it has adjustable straps, too, so you don’t have to visit the seamstress for alterations. This fall, we’ll be styling this with our favorite buttoned cardigan or fisherman sweater. On second thought, it’d also be a head-turner worn over some knee-length boots.
25. J.Crew Gwyneth V-Neck Slip Dress
This J.Crew Gwyneth slip dress is another PureWow reader-favorite dress. And while it’s such a no-brainer for summer, it’s also surprisingly suitable for the autumn months. It’s made of a cupro blend that’s more durable than silk and will feel luxuriously soft and smooth against your body. Plus, it’s machine-washable, folks. Besides the difference of materials, we love how this frock distinguishes itself from the rest of the slip dress bunch with its thicker straps that can hide a bra and small V-neck. It’s one of those slip dresses that looks complete without all the extras, but don’t be fooled, we’ll be copying the brand’s styling and tying a blue sweater around our waist ASAP.
26. En Saison Emily Rib A-Line Mini Dress
Twiggy vibes, anyone? This ‘60s-style sweater dress is a stunner, from the mock neck to the flared long sleeves that are fun, dramatic and cozy. The fabric is fully ribbed throughout, making it especially complimentary on any body shape and super stretchy, too. The hem of the dress slightly flares out and mirrors the shape of the sleeves. While it’s constructed with a polyester blend, it does contain some wool that will make this feel that much warmer once the weather cools. To properly care for it and preserve the material, you will need to dry clean this, but that’s something we’re willing to commit to. Pair it with beige heels for the ultimate monochromatic look.

This one’s for all the Carrie Bradshaw fans. If you’ve always wanted to recreate that little grey dress moment from season two but didn’t know where to begin, this mini number from Abercrombie & Fitch will do the trick. Just like the Sex and the City dress, this one hugs the figure, accentuating your natural curves. We love that it has a sweater-like yarn fabric and true mock neck that you’ll be thankful for come chillier days and nights. Whether you’re looking to recreate Bradshaw’s iconic look or just want to add another staple mini dress to your collection, we highly suggest that you don’t pass on this.
