3 Ways Fine-Haired Girls Can Do the Textured Trend

Designers embraced loose, textured hairstyles for fall 2016. Various takes on the trend peppered runways at Altuzarra, Louis Vuitton, Diane von Furstenberg, and Missoni, among others. While curly- and wavy-haired women are definitely in luck this season, ladies with fine or straight strands needn’t miss the boat on this trend.

With a little extra forethought, those without natural bends can add waves to their hair with a few simple strategies, says hairstylist Amber Duarte. “The No. 1 thing needed to create textured, lived-in hair is product,” she tells Yahoo Beauty. “Product is key!”

According to Duarte, this texturizing process can be done at night before bed, or while you are getting ready for a night out. “I like to start with a beach spray,” she says. “On damp hair, spray Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray [$27], just don’t get too close to the roots. Keep the spray about two inches away from root, spritzing all the way through to the ends.”

Next, Duarte says to put your hair in a topknot — or two topknots, one on each side — and hit the sack. “In the a.m., release the knots, finger-comb through the hair, and then add a texturizing spray.” Duarte swears by both Ouai Texturizing Hair Spray ($26) and Amika Un.Done Texture Spray ($24).

If you want your style to feature a little more curl mixed in, pull out your iron. “Usually a 1 ¼ iron is best,” says Duarte. “Just grab random pieces and alternate curl direction — one forward, one back, and so on. Amika makes a great iron with wands that are changeable [$220].” When you’re all, done flip your head over and add a light dry shampoo like R&Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo ($29). Set with a light hairspray, like Oribe Superfine Hairspray ($33), “once hair is to your standards,” says Duarte.

Let’s say you want a textured ’do, but you don’t have time to set the hair overnight. “The process above can also be done with two pigtail braids,” says Duarte. “If you don’t have time to let your braids set overnight starting with damp hair, go over dry braids with a flatiron — I use one from T3 ($180) — and that should set the wave in.”

If you want a lazy day of minimal styling, you can also recycle your texture for Day 2 hair. “When you want to keep that texture another day, but your hair is falling a little flat or getting oily, my absolute favorite is Klorane Dry Shampoo [$20]. It works magic!” Apply with head upside down first, before flipping hair over and applying to the roots for a total revive.

If you need a nighttime style, you can rock two cool trends in 24 hours. According to hairstylist and texture specialist Dickey, the best method for adding curl or wave to fine and straight textures is to “take advantage of styles that move you from day to evening, like wearing a halo or Bavarian braids during the day,” he tells Yahoo Beauty. “Add a water-based, nonsticky mousse, like Hair Rules Wavy Mousse [$24], to damp, towel-dried hair before braiding. Then you can take down your braid after an eight-hour day at the job for beautiful, beachy Hollywood waves.”

If you’re looking for texture with extra body, Dicky also suggests using steam rollers for a bigger curl — like at Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen. “They are also great for adding soft curls or waves that leave hair conditioned, instead of using traditional heat that will fry your strands,” he says. When you remove the rollers, just add a texturizing spray like Bumble & Bumble Dryspun Finish ($31) to lift and muss.

Alternatively, you can use a nonsticky dry hairspray like Garnier Deconstructed Texture Tease Dry Touch Finishing Spray ($5) on dry hair before adding foam steam rollers. “Wind a one-inch section around your roller, before allowing hair to set for 15 minutes — or more, depending on length,” Dickey says. “Once dry, you should have gorgeous spirals” with just a little extra texture.
