3 Ways Exercise Makes Your Skin Absolutely Amazing

New year, new gym regimen. Right? Right! Whether you're heading to a workout class regularly or just looking to fit exercise into your life more regularly, now's a great time to reevaluate your workout routine.

Of course, in the winter making it to the gym or a yoga class when the temperatures are frigid is no easy feat. And in the summer, well, we don't have to tell you that the scorching heat can make it way less likely you'll go for that run. The new year is ripe for you to buckle up and commit to new fitness goals, friends. And if you need more convincing, here's one more reason not to skip the elliptical, beyond, you know, staying healthy and beating stress: Your skin.

When you work out, your skin may actually improve, giving you the best complexion for a healthy, rosy glow. “Working out improves blood flow to the skin which allows more nutrients to circulate through the various layers to slow the aging of skin cells,” explains Dr. Bruce E. Katz, M.D. of JUVA Skin & Laser Center in New York City. Another bonus of hitting the gym? “Increased blood flow also lubricates the skin to reduce skin dryness,” notes Dr. Katz. Who knew? What a welcome side effect.

Even more impressively, regular exercise may even help to ward off wrinkles and fine lines. “Exercise also keeps collagen and elastic fibers flexible and smooth to reduce the occurrence of wrinkles,” explains Katz. See you at that early morning Pilates class.

And lest you need more convincing beyond healthier skin, science even says that exercise can make you happier than money. (Check out our story on the research here.)
