Protein, often hailed as the cornerstone of a healthy diet, plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including muscle repair, hormone regulation, and immune support. Beyond their fundamental roles, certain protein sources have gained attention for their potential to aid in weight loss. These sources not only provide essential nutrients but also promote satiety and boost metabolism, making them valuable allies in achieving a slim waistline.

We checked in with Jacek Szymanowski, PN certified nutritionist and health coach, and Dr. Mark Anton to learn about three protein-rich foods that can aid in shedding unwanted fat, especially around the waist. They revealed that cottage cheese, bone broth, and grass-fed beef are the ones to eat more of. Read on to find out why.

Cottage Cheese

Cottage cheese, with its creamy texture and mild flavor, has long been a staple in many diets. Despite its humble appearance, this dairy delight packs a powerful punch when it comes to aiding in weight loss and achieving a slim waistline. Rich in protein and low in calories, cottage cheese is not only a satisfying snack but also helps promote feelings of fullness and satiety, making it an excellent addition to a weight-loss regimen. Additionally, its high calcium content has been linked to increased fat breakdown and improved metabolism.

"Cottage cheese contains a high amount of protein and a low amount of fat. A ½ cup of cottage cheese contains 14 grams of protein and two grams of fat. For a healthier snack, you can top your cottage cheese with raw veggies and fruits," Szymanowski says.

Bone Broth

Bone broth, known for its rich flavor and comforting warmth, has surged in popularity for its numerous health benefits. Made by simmering animal bones and connective tissue for an extended period, bone broth is packed with nutrients like collagen, gelatin, and amino acids, which support gut health, joint function, and skin elasticity.

Additionally, bone broth is low in calories and high in protein, making it a satisfying and nourishing addition to any weight-loss regimen.

"Bone broth is another excellent source of protein, particularly because it is rich in collagen and other minerals that support digestive health and detoxification," says Dr. Anton. Furthermore, he says "its high protein content helps in maintaining muscle mass during weight loss, and its amino acids like glutamine support gut health, which is vital for optimal metabolism."

Grass-Fed Beef

Compared to conventionally raised beef, grass-fed varieties tend to be lower in total fat and calories while being higher in beneficial nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids. These compounds not only support overall health but also contribute to increased fat burning and improved metabolic function.

Szymanowski adds that "grass-fed beef contains many nutrients, such as antioxidants and omega-3s. It also packs a substantial amount of protein and a smaller amount of fat. The protein helps you feel full for longer, reducing your overall calorie intake for the day."

Protein-rich foods play a multifaceted role in supporting overall health and achieving weight loss goals, particularly when it comes to slimming the waistline. Through their ability to promote satiety, boost metabolism, and support various bodily functions, protein sources like cottage cheese, grass-fed beef, and bone broth emerge as valuable allies in shedding unwanted fat.
