From Harper's BAZAAR

Jennifer Lopez recently premiered her latest single, "In the Morning," and like most J.Lo productions, the accompanying music video is a must-see. Not only does Lopez look amazing in the new visuals, but she also shows off a slew of striking, out-of-this-world beauty looks as she sings the sentimental lyrics.

"And she loved a boy even more than she loved herself ... I am soooo excited for you to see the official video for #InTheMorning," wrote Lopez on Twitter this week of the video's narrative and concept. "It's full of symbolism about a dark one-sided relationship and the realization that you can't change anyone else ... you can only change yourself!"

As for her otherworldly costumes, Lopez appears in a series of ensembles that includes a structural, armor-inspired dress and an intricate bead-embellished gown; she even appears in the buff, posing as a glowing fallen angel. Lopez's jaw-dropping Valentino couture coat and crystal-embellished face cage, which she wore during her headlining performance for Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, also makes a repeat appearance.

But the real standout from the video is Lopez's makeup, which was carefully crafted by celebrity makeup artist David Velasquez, who has also worked with star musicians such as Doja Cat, Kali Uchis, Rico Nasty, and more.

Below, Velasquez walks us through how he created some of the standout looks from "In the Morning," including Lopez's punchy eye makeup, her glittery shadows, and, of course, how he re-created the singer's iconic and trademark glossy nude lip.

We're used to seeing J.Lo in full glam, but never on quite this level. Where did you and Lopez take inspiration from for these otherworldly looks?

I've always loved a signature J.Lo glow, so she truly was my inspiration for this project. I really wanted to pay homage to her past iconic looks such as the gorgeous purple eye shadow from "Ain't It Funny" and Tony Duran's 1999 photograph of JLo with angel wings. Our goal was to pull those inspirations and bring them to life in this music video by giving it a more edgy, editorial feel. I was also inspired by Jora Frantzis's direction for the story and the ethereal elements that she brought in.

How did the makeup for each look correspond to the "characters" that Lopez portrays in the music video?

There were a lot of beautiful contrasts between the soft and edgy in this music video, and I wanted to make sure the makeup is an extension of that. For example, when she was floating in the water, I was really inspired by the color of the waves and wanted to make sure that essence was present in the makeup. For the angel, I brought in shimmer to amplify the dreaminess of the moment. Then, I brought in more bold, darker colors to showcase the growth of all these strong characters that she's portraying.

The eye makeup in the video specifically is so beautifully vibrant, punchy, and glittery. What products did you use to achieve these standout looks?

For the "mermaid" look specifically, my assistant, Josie Melano, and I used an original mix for the light pink shimmer pressed powder, Cammy Nguyen liquid eyeliner, and the DUO eyelash adhesive to adhere Swarovski crystals for that special graphic eye look. I also used Chanel Beauty’s foundation, Dior Beauty for highlights, and the tan was from Isabel Alysa.

My personal favorite was the bold look behind the diamond-encrusted headpiece. I needed to create a look that would pop, so I used ColourPop's black lip pencil, Makeup Forever's Liquid Matte, Jeffree Star’s Blood Sugar Palette, and Fenty’s Trophy Wife as the golden shimmer on her eyelids.

Which look was the most time consuming? And around how long did each look take to bring to life?

I'm pretty good with timing when it comes to music videos, so I try to stay in the 40- to 60-minute time bracket. If I had to pick a look that was the most intricate, I would say the mermaid look because of the layering that needed to be done. In addition to the full face makeup, we added an embellishment of diamonds to the top and bottom lashes.

Though Lopez tries a bunch of new makeup looks for the video, her signature nude lip still makes an appearance. Tell us what you used to achieve that perfect nude-hued pout.

Jennifer's nude lip is iconic, and I'm so glad I was able to create my own version of it. I used a Pat McGrath lip pencil, Artist Couture lipstick Angel Baby, and Scott Barnes's XXX gloss to top it off.
