The New #3 Movie on Netflix Is a Must-Watch Drama Starring Carey Mulligan & Ralph Fiennes

Are you looking for new streaming content on Netflix? Introducing The Dig, a must-watch British drama film.

Although The Dig had a limited release last month, it just recently premiered on the streaming service. And in a matter of days, the flick has already claimed the number three spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies. (It’s currently ranked behind Below Zero and Finding 'Ohana.)

The Dig is a dramatized story about the real-life excavation of Sutton Hoo, which took place in 1939. The film focuses on an archaeologist named Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), who is hired by Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) to excavate the burial grounds at her estate. After several digs, the site is found to be of major historical significance. Still, one question remains: Will Basil get credit for his work?

Although the storyline sounds slightly dry, there’s a reason it landed a spot on Netflix’s list of top-rated movies. Just saying.

In addition to Mulligan and Fiennes, the film also stars Lily James (Peggy Piggott), Johnny Flynn (Rory Lomax), Ben Chaplin (Stuart Piggott), Ken Stott (Charles Phillips), Archie Barnes (Robert Pretty) and Monica Dolan (May Brown).

The Dig was directed by Simon Stone (The Daughter). Although it’s based on the namesake 2007 novel by John Preston, the screenplay was written by Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre). Carolyn Marks Blackwood (Coriolanus), Meg Clark (Suburbicon), Murray Ferguson (Afterlife), Redmond Morris (The Book Thief), Anne Sheehan (Eye in the Sky), Gabrielle Tana (Philomena) and Ellie Wood (Bleak House) served as producers.
