3 Easy Hacks to Upgrade Store-Bought Pie for Thanksgiving

Yahoo Food is proud to present “The Tipline,” a video series giving you tips, tricks, and hacks to get you through the holiday season and weeknight dinners alike. First up: Three easy ways to improve a store-bought pie.

Store-bought pies come in handy when you’re running late to Grandma’s house for dinner — they’re easy, already packaged well for travel, and are an acceptable hostess gift if they come from a good bakery. And hey, it’s better than showing up empty-handed. But once placed on the table next to your granny’s homemade apple pie, glistening with a buttery, hand-cut crust topped with fresh whipped cream, your store-made dessert may look a bit stale.

A few homemade additions to the average pie can take that dessert to the next level, as the video above shows.

Make custom leaf crust cut-outs with store-bought pie crust and cookie cutters to trim your pumpkin pie. Or add a delicious caramel pecan topping to a store-bought apple pie. And for a pre-baked pecan pie, combine whipped cream and maple syrup for a fluffy whipped cream topping.

Serve your pies in a pretty baking dish, and no one will ever suspect you outsourced your dessert.
