The 3 Canopy Beds We're Dreaming of Now—Plus, How We'd Style Them

The storied canopy bed immediately adds sophistication and elegance to any bedroom. Initially dreamed up for practical purposes—the bed hangings were meant to keep out drafts and chill in the 16th century—canopy beds eventually became a status symbol of the nobility and remained en vogue throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
Today, we're seeing the towering designs popping up in the most beautiful iterations. Take RH's new catalog, for example, which features canopy beds in almost every collection. Additionally, designers like Rose Tarlow, Julian Chichester, and others are regularly keeping canopy beds in their rotation.
"I think as furniture design and interiors have become more refined and simplified, a strong focal point in a room is more important than ever, and a gorgeous canopy bed creates lots of drama and visual interest," says Julie Lawrence, the designer behind the RH Thaddeus canopy bed below. "We have also moved away from overdressed beds with layers and layers of blankets, throws and pillows, but a canopy bed still exudes feelings of a luxurious and romantic sanctuary, without all the additional bedding. In larger bedrooms, a canopy bed can add much-needed architectural interest to the space. Beds are always an interesting design challenge, but canopy beds are particularly enjoyable to work on. Because I know they will be statement pieces, I can really let my creativity flow, be bolder, and dream big."
Here, we've selected three of our current favorite canopy beds—all in varying, interesting materials—along with the new fabrics and accompanying pieces we would pair them with.
Thaddeus Leather Panel Canopy Bed
Designed by Julie Lawrence, this hand-hammered brass bed takes its sculptural shape from the works of Salvador Dalí and Diego Giacometti. Leather panels in a muted taupe add softness to juxtapose the hardness of the frame.
