It’s one of the few things my kids will eat first thing in the morning.

Mornings are hard. Unless you’re a morning person, in which case…good for you. But when it comes to the four people who live in my house (myself, my husband, and our two kids ages 11 and five), waking up before the sun is a struggle.

The grown-ups are exhausted, the kids are groggy, and no one, despite needing fuel for the long day ahead, has any interest in breakfast. I just can’t send my kids out into the world without at least a few calories to tide them over until lunch, so I’ve tried a ton of breakfast options in my search for something that they’ll eat.

One winner—after many trials—is a simple freezer find that I pick up whenever I’m at Target: Good & Gather Organic Blueberry Mini Waffles.

Why I Love Good & Gather Mini Waffles

What I love about these mini waffles is that they're not too sweet, which my kids and I both appreciate. Plus they're made with whole grains—a bonus for my endless pursuit of fiber. I used to swear by the Eggo Nutri-Grain Blueberry Waffles, but unfortunately, Kellogg's stopped making them, sending me into a bit of a tailspin. I’ve tried every frozen blueberry waffle I could get my hands on since then, and these are the closest things I’ve found in terms of flavor and texture.

The flavor is a nice balance between the nutty whole grains and the sweet blueberries, and after a trip through the toaster, they’re perfectly crispy. They’re a bit thinner than some of the other frozen waffles out there, which makes them easier to eat out of hand. That’s another plus for my kids who will not commit to a knife-and-fork experience at 6:45 in the morning.

How I Serve Good & Gather Mini Waffles

I pop a couple of waffles in the toaster oven and they’re hot and crispy in under five minutes. Sometimes my kids just grab one and run out the door, nibbling as they walk to school. But if we find ourselves with extra time, I might heat a little cup of maple syrup for dipping.

Or, once the waffles have taken the edge off, I can offer up a banana without the risk of being snapped at by a grumpy tween. Best case scenario: After a few bites of waffle, my youngest asks me to scramble an egg for her, and we can add a bit of protein to the party.

Good & Gather Organic Mini Waffles Are Egg & Dairy Free

Though we are lucky enough to have a fairly allergy-free household, these waffles happen to be egg and dairy-free, which I know can be a hard combination to find, especially in a kid-friendly format. I can’t discern a difference in terms of taste between these and their egg-and-dairy counterparts, and I always appreciate having egg and dairy-free options available so that I’m prepared no matter who drops by.

I’ve always got a box of these mini waffles in the freezer. I even stock up on them when we go on vacation since they’re a quick and easy breakfast that can be made using just a toaster or toaster oven—something I can usually find even if there isn’t a full kitchen.
