3.1 Phillip Lim Paints a Picture of the New York City Woman for Fall 2024

After making its grand return to the runway last season, 3.1 Phillip Lim is testing out a new way to present its collections — this time, through a half-art gallery, half-boutique style set-up, embodying two of New York's greatest destinations.

"This one is really an ode to our community," Lim tells Fashionista.

He's specifically referring to the women and artists of New York City, with an emphasis on where all these women's lives and art intersect. (The collection's aptly titled "Intersections".) Lim called upon poets, set designers and more creatives (such as Dong-Ping Wong of Food Architects, photographer Jiro Konami, composer Sugar Vendil, graphic design studio Social Species) to create the two-part Fall 2024 activation, which will be open to the public over the weekend of New York Fashion Week. As the collection notes read: "Each corner of the city is an incubator for creativity — a diverse cultural fabric that becomes the ultimate source of collaboration and inspiration."

The 3.1 Phillip Lim brand has stayed consistent over the years, focused on making pieces that are realistic yet sharp, considered but effortlessness-seeming. That intention remains central for Fall 2024, but Lim says his understanding of the New York woman continues to become clearer.

"This collection is the intersection of our woman's wardrobe in life, love, work and play," he explains. "A wardrobe that can exist in this chaotic but addictive city. Every year, we try to carve out who that woman is more clearly, and it's always a challenge because she's always evolving — but we evolve with her."

Beyond the strong outerwear and day-to-night workwear (two key elements of any New Yorker's closet), Lim also has a variety of bags to reflect different preferences. For example, there's a smaller silhouette for going about town and a tote style for those who prefer to schlep (again, any New Yorker); all of them have "New York" emblazoned on them two or three times, so no matter where the 3.1 Phillip Lim woman goes, she always carries the energy of her city with her.

"We're a New York brand, but she lives all over the world," says Lim. "She identifies with a sensibility and a youthful spirit. It's a certain classicism with subversion. It's someone who is a serious person, but they don't take themselves too seriously."

Whether it's the "melting pot" of people in Lim's company or the many run-ins he has at events, on the street or otherwise, chances are if you've come into close proximity with Lim, a small piece of you is in this collection.

"When you're working on the individual designs, it's quite instinctive," he says. "You have a feel for something specific — like, 'I want this shape of a jacket.' But when you're actually styling the lookbook and you put it all together, you realize the woman you painted is an accumulation of everyone."
