We don't want to admit it, but the truth is the world is a very, very creepy place. Want to keep living in denial? Click out of this post now. But if you want to know just how creepy this world is, or how creepy it can get...proceed.

But don't say we didn't warn you!

1. First, look at how much this map of people who went missing near national parks overlaps with this map of America's cave systems.

The thought of how many people might have gotten lost in caves and never found their way out is very creepy and disturbing.

Snopes gives some more context on this creepy image here.

2. Caves aren't just creepy and dangerous on land. Check out this sign at the entrance of an underwater cave.

3. Of course, creepy things don't only happen in caves. This person was out for their nightly stroll when they came across this hair-raising image.

4. This new homeowner went into the basement and found this...tightly sealed.

Sure, it's most likely harmless. But it also could not be...like when this other new homeowner discovered the remains of a woman missing for 28 years hidden behind a false wall.

5.And this new homeowner went into their basement and found this. Shudders.

6. Your home isn't the only place you might stumble across something you very much wish you hadn't.

7. This person got a notification in the middle of the night that someone was at their door, and when they looked they saw this. Not at all creepy, right?

8. Yep, sometimes real life can seem straight out of a horror film...especially in the middle of the night.

9. The early morning can be pretty creepy too.

10. In Portland, a guy named Mark returned to his car to find his tires slashed. The creep who did it left a note bragging (threatening?) that they'd easily found Mark's information (including, I imagine, his home address).

11. This is a very real fungus you might come across out in nature that's known as "Dead Man's Fingers."

12. And this is a very real — and very creepy — fungus called "Devil's Fingers," which makes me very uncomfortable.

13. Creepy things could happen to you at any moment. What would you do if you turned over a table and saw this?

It reads: "The truth is under" and "the body lies at..." plus location coordinates.

14. Or if you received this absolutely terrifying letter?

15. Or if you stumbled across these abandoned animatronics?

16. Or if you saw this in a window staring down at you?

17. Want to be even more unsettled? This is a statue of the Christian martyr Saint Bartholomew, who is said to have been skinned alive and then decapitated. He is often depicted — as he is below — holding the skin that was cut off him.

Michelangelo even included a depiction of Bartholomew in his "The Last Judgement" at the Sistine Chapel. That's Bartholomew holding the knife that flayed him and his skin.

18. Sometimes things that aren't meant to be creepy are really, REALLY creepy.

19. Like these sweet children celebrating Halloween circa 1900.

20. Sorry to say, but this is a real story: A radiology technologist became obsessed with a sick, young patient, and when she died, he stole her corpse — "preserved" it with household items — and slept with it for seven years.

You can read more in-depth about this here.

21. This is a real story too — and it just made me double-check that my front door is locked.

22.This museum in Mexico is dedicated to the horrific things that humans have done to each other. Imagine, just imagine being forced to take a seat on this monstrosity.

23. Or imagine seeing someone wearing this mask moments before he decapitated you.

24. Want some well-preserved creepiness? The head of Portugal's first serial killer, Diogo Alves — responsible for 70-plus murders — has been preserved in formaldehyde since his execution in 1841. That's right, this perfectly preserved head of a monster is 161 years old.

Why is his head preserved? It's likely due to the period's interest in phrenology, the since-discredited belief that the shape of one's head can indicate character and mental abilities. You can learn more about Alves and his creepy head here.

25. If none of that has creeped you out, maybe this actual bird called a Potoo found in Central and South America will. I would not want to come across one on a dark night, no sir.

26. Or if that bird doesn't creep you out, maybe this spider will.

27. Or this frightening moth with glowing eyes.

28. Even creepier? This wasp nest that somehow became one with an abandoned doll.

29. Lastly, this Crybaby Buick is out there, driving around, and it is very, very creepy. DO. NOT. WANT.

Sweet dreams, everybody!!!
