Valentine's Day if often considered to be the sappiest of holidays. You shower your significant other with gifts and flowers and maybe even a proposal. You make grand public proclamations about your relationship or spend an obscene amount of money on dinner, and it's all in the name of love. But for some people, Valentine's Day has gone a little too far. Making a reservation four months in advance? No thank you! Overpriced gifts exchanged over dinner at a crowded restaurant? Hard pass! Thankfully, for the Valentine's skeptics, or those who don't take the holiday too seriously, there are plenty of Valentine's Day memes and jokes that help to take the lovefest down a notch or two.
Though Valentine's Day has become a day associated with love and affection, it's origins are much darker. Historians believe the holiday originated in ancient Rome. From Feb. 13 to 15, Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia, according to NPR. During the feast, men would sacrifice a goat and a dog, and then they would whip the women with the hides of those animals they had just killed. (I wish I was joking.) Women would volunteer to let men hit them because they believed it would make them fertile, according to NPR. Women would then place their names in a large urn, and bachelors would pull one out. The pair would then stay together for the next year, according to History.com, and would often marry.
