Wang Yueyi doesn’t hold back when it comes to prints. Her inspiration? The members of Shanghai’s art scene from the 1970s, known for rebelling against urban normality.

Wang Yueyi says her partner, photographer Jing Yue (pictured), has a great influence on her personal aesthetic.

Jing Yue used his philosophy degree from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology as the basis for his video series, which captures the life he shares with Wang Yueyi.

For Wang Yueyi and Jing Yue, time spent together means raiding local vintage stores for pieces with exaggerated logos.

The duo embraces their eclectic style. “A high/low mix breaks the boundaries between beauty and life,” says Wang Yueyi.

As a doctor, Rong Fenglan doesn’t like to restrict herself to just one look—but wearability is key. Both she and daughter Gao Rongrong share an experimental approach to trends, while favoring easygoing pieces.

“My mother made me understand that style is not something you have to hurry; that a woman’s elegance is more about the details and letting your inner beauty shine through,” says Gao Rongrong.

Yvonne Zhang’s career as a lifestyle blogger was spurred by her former life in fashion publishing. Today, Gucci’s logo T-shirts and sweaters are the backbone to her hassle-free wardrobe. “They feel effortlessly chic to me. Who doesn’t like to live in relaxed styles?”

Yvonne Zhang’s daughter, Emma, already has her own fashion sense. “She often challenges my style choices and criticizes my outfit coordination,” she says with a laugh. “Thanks to her guidance, my styling skills have improved.”

Shanghainese model Emma Pei notes that life on a catwalk is very different to her day-to-day family life. The biggest difference about her off-duty life? “I hardly wear makeup and live in T-shirts,” she says.

A day spent in Shanghai’s historic district calls for a crisp trouser suit with a dash of unexpected color popping through. The final detail? Delicate stiletto pumps.

“Welcoming the arrival of my daughter was the happiest moment of my life,” Emma Pei says. Her husband, Wang Zhuxioyin, doubles as the family’s fashion stylist. “He has always given me advice, whether about clothes or life in general,” she says. “When it comes to our style, it’s usually the most naturally practical pieces that win.”

Guan Ziyun (left) and Guan Ziwen are identical twin sisters who describe themselves as shy. The two students are no wallflowers, though, with their social media followers on alert to see their latest outfits.

The twins are rarely spotted apart; their full personal style inventory is swapped between them, from clothes to accessories to music.

Guan Ziyun’s dressing tip for Shanghai’s notoriously cold winters? A longline puffer jacket (with a complementary abbreviated cut for her twin sister).

“When I put on my pink sweater and pink shoes, it takes me back to summertime when I was 18 years old. There’s a feeling of first love about it,” says primary school teacher Liu Jie (left, with her twin sister, Liu Jing, center, and mother Liu Yihan, right).

“My mother is very independent and is particularly cool,” says her daughter Liu Jie, who notes that her mother, Liu Yihan, gravitates toward more simple, slim, and fitted clothes.

Liu Jing sees her sister Liu Jie as her personal fashion inspiration: “When we go through her wardrobe together, she often gets brain waves and mixes unusual clothing combinations. The result will be unexpectedly great.”

China’s sprawling fashion capital, Shanghai, has long been revered for its idiosyncratic sense of style—a mix of Eastern and Western influences historically chalked up to the influx of Hollywood films during the ’20s. Nearly a century later, that blend of modern and traditional cultural inspirations continues to impact Shanghai’s style tribes.

Here, we meet six families who epitomize the current Shanghainese aesthetic—from a young couple (Wang Yueyi and Jing Yue), who share a love of hyper-saturated prints and classic sportswear, to a Chinese doctor (Gao Rongrong), who cites both her mother and daughter as her primary sources of fashion inspiration, to identical twin sisters Guan Ziwen and Guan Ziyun, whose matching looks go viral on Weibo nearly every day.

Each grouping is captured wearing their pick of Gucci’s Pre-Fall ’18 collection on the streets of China’s most stylish city.
