The Islamic calendar is a fully lunar calendar with 12 months, each month containing 29 or 30 days. The year kicks off with a sacred month by the name of Muharram. Literally, the Arabic word “Muharram” means “that which is made sacred.” A sacred month in Islam is a month in which fighting is prohibited to allow for peace. In Islam, salvation is earned through one’s own hard work. Each person has a balance of their own good deeds and sins based on their intentions and actions. In sacred months, good deeds are multiplied and weigh more heavily, but similarly so do sins; sins are considered more serious in sacred months. You can learn more about Islamic months in our explainers on everything to know about Ramadan and the date of Eid al-Adha.

The other significance of Muharram is a day called Ashura. Ashura means the “tenth” and it refers to the tenth day of the month. On this day, it’s believed the Prophet Moses and his people were saved from Pharaoh by the splitting of the sea. For this reason (before it was decreed in the Quran to fast during the month of Ramadan), Prophet Muhammad used to fast on the 10th of Muharram. To this day, some Muslims might fast on the 10th of Muharram — however, it is optional.

Muharram also marks the month of past political unrest and it is the month in which Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussain, was martyred. His martyrdom is an event that is particularly commemorated by Shia Muslims. This may be done in Shia communities through congregational gatherings and an overall practice of mourning and sadness.

What is Muharram?

Muharram is the first Islamic month on the 12 month Islamic lunar calendar. Its date changes every year on the solar Gregorian calendar. It moves back about 10 days each year, taking place that much earlier than the year before on the solar calendar. This means that it shifts throughout seasons as well.

Why is Muharram so special?

Muharram is an Arabic word that translates to mean "that which is made sacred." It is a sacred month on the Islamic calendar. It is also the first month on the Islamic calendar, kicking off the new Hijri year — the era used in the Islamic lunar calendar.

According to Islamic law, there are four sacred months, or Ashurul Hurum, in an Islamic year. This is stated in the Quran:

“God decrees that there are twelve months — ordained in God’s Book on the Day when He created the heavens and earth — four months of which are sacred: this is the correct calculation.”

— 9:36

Ramadan is a popular and holy month, but not a sacred month. The four sacred months are: Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qaddah, and Dhul-Hijjah. Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, Rajab is the third month, Dhul-Qaddah is the eleventh month and Dhul-Hijjah is the twelfth and final month. Dhul-Hijjah is the month in which Eid al-Adha takes place. Three of the four sacred months are consecutive and one month (Rajab) is stand-alone.

How do people observe Muharram?

Today, some highly practicing Muslims around the world might observe Muharram with an optional fast on the 10th day. In addition, for Shia Muslims, Muharram is a time of mourning. The grandson of Prophet Muhammad was martyred in Muharram; an event that is commemorated with great emphasis in Shia congregations.
