Figuring out stylish sofas for small spaces may seem like an easy feat because the room’s size is hardly overwhelming, but it’s more complicated than you think. Therefore, we tapped two interior designers who are experts in designing stunning, practical spaces—no matter how small.
"Look for pieces that can serve multiple purposes, such as a sofa bed or ottoman with storage when you’re trying to maximize a small space," New York-based designer Becky Shea tells House Beautiful. “I’m a firm believer in using vertical space to keep floor space clear of clutter. A rug is a great way to define the seating area and add a layer of texture to the space."
When it comes to the sofa itself, California native Sarah Rosenhaus reveals the key features to look for. "Fight your instinct to go small," she emphasizes. "When selecting a sofa, choose the largest piece you can fit in the space without restricting flow. Find a sofa with open legs which will give brevity while still defining the area."
That said, try to avoid anything that feels heavy like a skirted sofa or one with an upholstered base. Shea’s go-to? "A sectional sofa may not be the best choice for a small living room, as it can take up a lot of floor space and limit you on layering other elements without feeling cluttered," she explains. "A loveseat or apartment-sized sofa is a good alternative."
