This $24.4 Million Penthouse Caps a Landmark Building in New York City
Once headquarters for the New York Life Insurance Company, the lavishly embellished 16-story landmarked building at 108 Leonard Street is one of the Big Apple’s great architectural attractions. It was converted to condos in 2018 and went on to welcome music industry titan Clive Davis into its fold of 19th-century elegance. The exec sold his never-lived-in pad on the fifth floor for $4.6 million in 2023, a bit before the home across the hall came to market for $6.24 million. Now, a dazzling penthouse in the Tribeca tower is up for grabs for $24.4 million, and the building’s rich history isn’t all that comes with it.
Dubbed the Crown Penthouse, the stylish, light-filled home features custom amenities next to backdrops of the Empire State Building, City Hall, and the Municipal Building. Architect Griffith Thomas designed the building, which was completed in 1870, and two decades later, the esteemed firm McKim, Mead & White expanded the structure, which features an Italian Renaissance Revival-style façade. Because the building stretches an entire city block between Broadway and Lafayette Street, there are three attended lobbies with interiors by Jeffrey Beers International, and their captivating touches like soaring 15-foot ceilings, arched windows, and oak floors spill over into the abode.
The triplex spans floors 14 through 16, each of which can be accessed via private elevator. Beyond the foyer, the nearly 1,000-square-foot ballroom-sized great room is dominated by massive arched windows that provide unobstructed views to the north and east. Deep crown moldings and a marble fireplace enhance the massive room’s character. Chevron-pattern wood floors flow into the adjacent eat-in kitchen that’s decked out with an Arabescato Cerviole marble island and Miele appliances that include a six-burner gas cooktop and a 100-bottle wine fridge. An en suite bedroom completes the floor.
