This $21.5 Million Colorado Compound Blends Rustic Rocky Mountain Comfort With Plush Luxury

On a cul-de-sac between the Double Cabin and Lower Sundance ski runs in the Mountain Village area on the outskirts of Telluride, Colorado, a Rocky Mountain sanctuary that blends rustic, log cabin-style architecture with plush sophistication and a laundry list of amenities has popped up for sale at $21.5 million.

Tax records show the property is owned by Richard A. Baker, the governor, executive chairman, and CEO of the venerable Hudson’s Bay Company, whose holdings include the upscale department store chains Hudson’s Bay and Saks Fifth Avenue. Baker and his wife Lisa, whose primary home is a 45-acre spread in the prestigious Conyer’s Farm area of Greenwich, Connecticut, where they have a swimming pool installation by artist James Turrell, have owned the Colorado property since 2007 when they acquired it for just over $13 million.

The main bedroom is swaddled in sumptuous fabrics.

Family, friends, and accompanying staff are comfortably accommodated in the ten bedrooms and ten bathrooms plus three more powder rooms, spread throughout the almost-one-acre compound’s 16,300 square feet of living space that is dispersed among the main house, two standalone cottages, and a studio apartment.

There’s no need to clomp up and down stairs in ski your ski boots in the three-story stone and timber main house thanks to an elevator, and there’s no need to ever get into a chilly car in the freezing dead of winter thanks to the heated five-car garage. Plus, the 11 fireplaces sprinkled throughout the estate keep things warm and cozy.

Indoor recreation options include a bowling alley and a movie theater.

Guest bedrooms are ample with scenic views; many have fireplaces. The primary suite pampers the homeowner in five-star, Zen-contemporary sophistication with a fireplace, tons of built-ins, a spacious sitting area set against a mountain backdrop, and a wraparound balcony. There’s also a spa-style bathroom and a walk-in closet as large as the backroom storage area of a department store, with plenty of room for all the puffers, parkas, and microfleece jackets a person can pack on the PJ.

When the weather turns uncomfortably frosty or a snowstorm moves through, the home offers plenty of indoor pursuits. There are a couple of fireside bars, one of them situated off the double-height living room and appointed with fuzzy bucket swivel chairs positioned to take in the stunning mountain views. There’s another bar in the lower-level family room and games lounge, as well as a pool table, a movie theater, and a single-lane bowling alley.

The property is listed with Ken Grodberg of Compass.
