After last year, which delivered not one but two (!!) Met Galas over just a few months, it kind of felt like the wait for the 2023 event would be eternal—yet here we are. The first Monday in May is coming in hot, and we’ve got tons of juicy intel to share about what to expect from the 2023 Met Gala, starting with its star-studded cochairs.

Who is hosting the Met Gala this year? And who is attending?

The exclusive invite list for the Met Gala is pretty much under lock and key until the moment the attendees arrive on the red carpet, which is a big womp womp for those of us who are nosy (me). That said, we can count on these stars to walk the red carpet because they will be cochairing the whole evening: Michaela Coel, Dua Lipa, Penelope Cruz, and Roger Federer.

The Met Gala announcement came in the form of a virtual pamphlet on Insta:

Perf! Tell me more about this year’s cochairs.

They’re all obviously iconic. But let’s start with Michaela, who has been absolutely crushing her career as of late thanks to the success of her two shows I May Destroy You and Chewing Gum. (FYI, the actor earned an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series for the former project.) Plus in 2022, she dipped her toes into the Marvel Cinematic Universe by starring in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and managed to look impeccable at each and every press junket and premiere. TL;DR: She does it all!

Roger, for his part, is one of tennis’s all-time greatest players, although he announced his retirement last September. Even so the athlete still remains a renowned public figure thanks to everything from his endorsement deals to his philanthropic efforts.

Dula Peep Dua Lipa is a three-time Grammy winner, one of the world’s biggest pop stars, and the creator of a viral “lazy” dance, which she has since reclaimed like the superstar she is.

Penelope has a particularly special relationship with this year’s theme (more on that in a bit!) as she was often a muse for Karl Lagerfeld while he oversaw Chanel. She has been an ambassador for the fashion house since 2018 and even closed out its fall 2019 runway show, Karl’s only postmortem collection for the brand.

Interestingly enough, there are no designers included in this year’s cochair roster. It's unclear what that means for the party night of, but I’m so pumped for the 2023 cochairs that I’m willing to let Tom Ford’s absence slide. 😭

When is the Met Gala this year?

Type A people, rejoice! The 2023 Met Gala, known to take place on the first Monday in May, lands squarely on May 1 this year. Live coverage of the red carpet typically starts around 6 p.m. ET, although celebrities are known to show up fashionably late.

What’s the scoop on the Met Gala theme?

This year, the Met Gala will honor Karl Lagerfeld. The accompanying museum exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” is set to pay tribute to the couturier by way of showcasing 150+ of his original looks, beginning in the 1950s and spanning all the way to his death in 2019.

“He would sketch everything,” Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s Wendy Yu Curator in Charge, recalled to Vogue. “He would always say that he could draw before he could talk or walk. In many ways, it was his primary form of communication, whether he was delivering them by fax machine or iPhone. So at its heart, the exhibition will look at the evolution of Karl’s two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments.”

It’s unclear how celebs will interpret the theme “in honor of Karl,” but let’s hope they wear something interesting!

Anyway, that’s pretty much all we know for now, but stay tuned for more updates on the 2023 Met Gala as soon as we have ’em.
