The 2023 Colors of the Year Are Coming In—And They’re a Total Throwback
When it comes to color, one thing’s certain: The era of dreary grey is far, far behind us. From 2021’s shift toward warm, earthy neutrals to this year’s emphasis on happy-go-lucky greens, everything speaks to the comfort we’ve found at home, coupled with a yearning for self-expression (read: dopamine dressing). “We are rebounding from difficult times with a flood of creative expressions that provide escape, connection, comfort and survival—all at once—inspiring us to design new spaces that pull from the best of everything ever,” says Sara McLean, color expert and stylist at Dunn-Edwards. And so, as we head into 2023, there’s a new (or should we say old) theme emerging: rich, evocative tones.

Indeed, the name of next year’s paint game is all about nostalgia—and the trend has already made its way into this season’s interiors. Think: ‘70s rusty reds and olive greens mixed with bold blues and coffee-and-cream tones from the late ‘90s. “Joy and optimism fill our souls as survival mechanisms in the world of today,” McLean adds. “The color palettes of [2023] capture changing behaviors, emotional states and lifestyles. Warm chromatics dominate, echoing our optimism and the influence of space exploration. High-impact and nostalgic colors make a joyful comeback, earthy and vegetal shades delve into the mysteries of nature and delicate neutrals give us space to imagine and reflect.” So below, find three colors that are poised to rule our interiors in 2023.

First up: A warm, rusty red that Sherwin Williams has revealed as its 2023 color of the year. “Redend Point was inspired by the idea of finding beauty beyond ourselves. It is a heartening hue that invites compassion and connection into any space,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. It’s also worth mentioning that this color—which pays homage to 2021’s desert-inspired hues—embodies the shift toward artisanal, handcrafted decor. “Redend Point’s subtle pink undertones [delivers] an enveloping warmth that instantly makes you feel at home,” Wadden explains. “Build on its earthiness by utilizing the hue alongside natural-looking textiles and wood accents, or create a desert oasis by layering terracotta shades and clay materials.”

Next, we have a “bluish-greenish-something-in-betweenish” tone from Glidden paint by PPG that hits the jewel-toned furniture trend we’re seeing everywhere right now. “Consumers are seeking to simplify in this post-COVID era, as the past two years have shed a new light on the importance of serenity and little moments,” says Ashley McCollum, Glidden color expert. “Vining Ivy’s jewel-toned hue can be used to set a calming mood in spaces, as its blue communicates feelings of tranquility while the emerald evokes feelings of balance. When paired together, these two undertones create an ultra-rich, uber-trendy color that has us ‘in our feels’ as we cautiously emerge from the pandemic ready to resume living our best lives.” It’s also a sign that bold, unapologetic colors are returning to the design scene with a vengeance.
3. Behr: Blank Canvas (DC-003)

Finally, a cream-colored neutral that literally acts as a “blank canvas” for your decor aesthetic (whatever that may be). “As we look to 2023, we understand that comfort will still be a driving force behind design decisions and style statements,” says Erika Woelfel, Vice President of Color and Creative Services at Behr Paint. “This white easily harmonizes with a wide range of hues, including neutrals, earth tones and pastels for a charming and cozy appeal. Blank Canvas also pairs beautifully with black for a dramatic impact, and with bright accents like green or cobalt blue to instantly lift your mood.” To that end, new research conducted by Behr revealed that nearly all U.S. homeowners want their home to be a space where they can completely unwind (92 percent) and believe that it’s important their home feels like an escape from everyday stress (90 percent). As a result, the company selected a color that can be leveraged by DIYers, designers and professionals alike, whether they’re tackling a bedroom refresh to a complete kitchen remodel.
