When Are the 2022 Midterm Elections? A Guide to the Dates You Need to Know

You’ve heard about the midterms. You’ve read about the midterms. You’ve probably received an unsolicited phone call or email about the midterms. But when exactly are this year’s midterm elections, and why should you care? Let’s break it down.

When are the midterms?

This year, the general midterm elections will be on Tuesday, Nov. 8. However, depending on where you live, you might also be able to vote early in person or by mail. (Look up your state’s information here.) In the lead-up to Election Day, states have also held their own primary elections in order for voters to determine which candidates will be on the ballot come November. (See who will be on your ballot here.)

Per the New York Times, only one state—Louisiana—will have its U.S. Senate primary on Nov. 8 with multiple Democratic candidates going against the incumbent Republican; if no one wins a majority of the votes, the election will move to a runoff in December.

Who is up for election in the midterms?

It can be difficult to get people to vote when there’s no presidential election on the ballot, but the midterms are crucial for determining the future of your community and the country at large. Currently, Democrats have slim majorities in the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate. Come November, all House seats and 34 Senate seats are up for re-election, and the results will determine which party will dominate each chamber for the next two years and what kind of legislation will get passed for the rest of President Biden’s term. (For example, Republicans have already proposed a nationwide 15-week abortion ban, while Democrats are hoping to codify Roe if they gain a greater control of the Senate.) In addition, 36 states will vote on their governors, and there are countless other elections for attorneys general, mayors, state legislators, school boards, and more. Every one of these local seats influences the quality of life in that community—ranging from educational curriculums to environmental protections and voting rights.

How can I vote in the midterms?

First things first: If you’re not registered to vote, check here to see your state’s registration deadline. If you’re still in the window, get registered here.
