Tonight marks the return of the Met Gala, and the event is coming back with a statement. After last year's gala was cancelled due to the pandemic and the 2021 event was postponed from May to September, celebrities are at last arriving at the museum for fashion's biggest night. Many of the stars are wearing red (Jennifer Hudson), white (Julia Garner), and blue (Amanda Gorman), honoring this year's theme—American fashion.

The September 2021 Met Gala celebrates the opening of the new Costume Institute exhibit, "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion." As such, tonight's gala honors anything and everything American fashion. Guests are already interpreting the broad theme in a number of ways, from Billie Eilish's Marilyn Monroe-esque pink gown to Yara Shahidi's Josephine Baker-inspired look.

"In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" is part one of a a two-part exhibition. The second part will open on May 5, 2022 and will be called, "In America: An Anthology of Fashion." Part two will open with a second Met Gala on the first Monday in May of 2022.

Curator Andrew Bolton chose the theme for two reasons: “The main one was the fact that the American fashion community has been supporting us for 75 years, really since the beginning of the Costume Institute, so I wanted to acknowledge its support, and also to celebrate and reflect upon American fashion.”

“I think that the emphasis on conscious creativity was really consolidated during the pandemic and the social justice movements,” Bolton said. “And I’ve been really impressed by American designers’ responses to the social and political climate, particularly around issues of body inclusivity and gender fluidity, and I’m just finding their work very, very self-reflective. I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a Renaissance."
