The 2020 Grammy Nominations Are Here

The 62nd Grammy Award nominations were announced on Wednesday by Bebe Rexha, host Alicia Keys, Gayle King, Recording Academy president Deborah Dugan, and chair of the board of trustees Harvey Mason Jr. Some of the year’s biggest hitmakers—from Lizzo to Lil Nas X—came away with plenty of nods.

One particularly notable Grammy nominee was Michelle Obama, who was nominated for best spoken word album for the audio version of her memoir, Becoming. (She’s going to EGOT, isn’t she?) Aziz Ansari also received a nomination for best comedy album for Right Now, in which he addressed sexual misconduct allegations directed at him in 2018.

Lizzo received eight nominations, for her album Cuz I Love You as well as her earworm of a single “Truth Hurts,” while Lil Nas X received six, mostly for “Old Town Road.” Billie Eilish also received six nominations thanks to her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, and her single “Bad Guy,” meaning that the best new artist category—which also includes Black Pumas, Maggie Rogers, Rosalía, Tank and the Bangas, and Yola—should be a pretty interesting race.

Other album of the year nominees included Bon Iver, Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande, H.E.R., and Vampire Weekend. Meanwhile, the song of the year category also included “Always Remember Us This Way” from the the A Star Is Born soundtrack—which feels like somewhat of a throwback nomination—as well as Tanya Tucker’s “Bring My Flowers Now,” H.E.R. “Hard Place,” Taylor Swift’s “Lover,” and Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved.”

The record of the year category featured Post Malone & Swae Lee, Bon Iver, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, H.E.R., Khalid, Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lizzo.

Unsurprisingly Beyoncé was nominated in two different top categories: best pop solo performance for “Spirit” and best pop vocal album for The Lion King: The Gift. Noted kissers Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello got the best pop duo/group performance nod for “Señorita.”

Lil Nas X’s “Panini” scored him a best rap/sung performance nod along with DJ Khaled featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend, Lil Baby and Gunna, Mustard featuring Roddy Ricch, and Young Thug featuring J. Cole and Travis Scott. On the alternative album side of things, Big Thief, James Blake, Vampire Weekend, Thom Yorke, and Bon Iver were nominated, and Rosalía and Bad Bunny led best Latin rock, urban, or alternative album.

It’s hard to predict what will happen at the 2020 Grammy Awards on January 26, but we’re looking forward to seeing how Lil Nas X furthers the yeehaw agenda at the ceremony.
