Dark chocolate is seriously good for you — here’s why

Food Flash” explores the wild world of food news, from the health benefits of red wine to why dark chocolate is actually good for you.

If you have a sweet tooth, it can be hard to resist treats like cakes, cookies and candy.

We have good news for those looking for a sweet escape, though: Dark chocolate with at least 70 percent cocoa has a number of health benefits.

Here’s how indulging in the snack every now and then can actually be good for you.

1. It is rich in antioxidants

According to Healthline, dark chocolate is loaded with nutrients that slow the damage to cells caused by “free radicals,” or unstable molecules that the body produces as a reaction to environmental and other pressures.

2. It has anti-inflammatory powers

Research suggests that flavonoids, or the nutrients found in the cocoa bean that give dark chocolate its signature bitter taste, have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the risk of multiple health conditions, including cancer.

3. It improves heart health

Flavonols, a type of flavonoid, have been shown to lower blood pressure and improve circulation throughout the body, according to Healthline.

4. It boosts cognitive function

One study found that eating high-flavonol cocoa improved blood flow to the brain for participants. Cocoa also contains stimulant substances like caffeine, which, of course, can improve brain function in the short-term.

It’s official — you can now enjoy that dark chocolate and satisfy your sweet tooth while staying guilt-free.
