British man surprises girlfriend with proposal in her native language

Jack Shirley is a self-described wannabe filmmaker living in Hong Kong. He typically documents travel adventures with his girlfriend, Louise, but one day decided to make a vlog all on his own.

“Today’s the day, I’m gonna propose to Louise,” Shirley starts out the video.

Shirley explains that he already reached out to Louise’s mom and asked for permission and had spent the previous month taking Tagalog lessons from Louise’s sister — their native language.

His elaborate proposal plan is to perform the song “Sugar” by Maroon 5 — his and Louise’s song — in Tagalog. He flies her sister out and convinces Louise that it’s just a big celebration for her getting approved for her UK tourist visa.

Instead, Shirley hops up on stage in a tux and starts singing. He pulls a very confused Louise up on stage with him and then, after apologizing for butchering the song, gets down on one knee and proposes.

Louise says yes and the entire crowd explodes in cheers for several minutes as the couple embraces and she puts on her new engagement ring — which happens to be a replica of the ring from The Legend of Zelda.

Congrats to the happy couple! We can’t wait to see what surprises the wedding will bring.
