For celebrity clients like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Ariana Grande, Chris Appleton is the ultimate authority on red carpet-worthy hair.

But during quarantine, the British-born hairstylist, who’s become a celebrity and social media influencer in his own right, has been sharing tips just to keep us looking good for our next Zoom meeting.

Appleton’s been providing plenty of help on his Instagram page, but he also gave In The Know four easy, at-home styling tips — each for a different type of hair. The best part? His advice isn’t gender-specific and should work great for any gender.

Check out Appleton’s tips for short hair, long hair, bangs and colored hair below.

For short hair: Clippers are your friend

For guys, using clippers on your head (instead of just your beard) might be a new challenge. But Appleton has an easy tip for managing the task.

“When you’re doing the fade at the side [of the head], you start at the front and you always flick away from the scalp toward the top,” Appleton told In The Know.

For long hair: Pick the right scissors

The right scissors can make or break a haircut — especially for women and those with longer hair. Appleton says shaper ones are always better, as dull, kitchen-type scissors will “chew” your hair as you cut.

“If you use kitchen scissors it can kind of chomp,” he said. “And you’ll end up with bits missing.”

For bangs: Keep your hair dry

Appleton has a few tips for cutting bangs, but a crucial one is to keep your hair dry. The stylist notes that it’s never wise to get bangs wet before cutting, as they’ll shrink up after the fact.

“You’re gonna end up with them shrinking when you dry,” he added. “And it always looks too short.”

For colored/dyed hair: Stick to powder

Those with highlights might be struggling to keep their hair colored at home. But Appleton suggests focusing on the roots — particularly with one critical tool.

He recommends Color Wow’s Root Touch Up powder, which will help blend in highlights or cover up grey hairs until you safely can get to a salon for a full coloring.
