One of my favorite things to receive for any holiday is fresh flowers or a new houseplant that instantly adds a touch of greenery to my apartment. There’s something about receiving flowers in the mail — they instantly brighten any day.

While the tradition of sending flowers for special occasions has been around for decades, more companies are now offering to ship live houseplants — whether it’s online florists adding plants to their existing selections or new, direct-to-consumer companies like Bloomscape and The Sill, which are now ruling the online houseplant scene.

And what might come as a surprise is that this revival of the houseplant market is almost all thanks to millennials — you know, the new plant parents who have contributed to the Instagram hashtag #plantsofinstagram with more than 5 million photos of their fiddle-leaf fig or monstera. There are now dozens of Insta-famous houseplant accounts, like The Jungalow or I Plant Even, which have developed a devout following of plant lovers.

While sending houseplants might be the new flower delivery, flowers aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. There are still plenty of trendy arrangements you’re going to want to send to loved ones (think this gorgeous bouquet from Urban Stems) on Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or just to yourself as a pick-me-up. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite flower and houseplant delivery services to shop the next time you need a quick gift.

1. Bloomscape

With a large selection of trendy indoor plants, Bloomscape ships full-grown, living-room-ready plants in a pot that already include proper drainage and a saucer. From monstera to orchids, most of Bloomscape’s houseplants are available in several different sizes ranging from small to extra-large — so you can find one for your budget.

Plus, the company provides super informative how-tos and best practices for home care, both on its website and with the package you’ll receive — including watering tips, what type of light the plant needs and if it’s toxic to pets. And if you still weren’t convinced to check out Bloomscape’s plants, the brand also has a real-life Plant Mom, who’s available to answer any plant questions you have.

If you need same-day delivery, From You Flowers has you covered. Simply choose an arrangement from its same-day delivery category and be sure to place the order by 3 p.m. in the recipient’s time zone. The company is known for its affordable arrangements (hello, $34 for one dozen roses), but you can also choose from a selection of houseplants and succulents, including money trees, hydrangeas and more.

If you’re looking for A+ service and help with your delivery, ProFlowers is ranked highest in customer satisfaction among online flower retailers for five of the last six years — including in 2020. The company offers floral arrangements for all occasions, but these are a great last-minute option if you need same-day flowers for a birthday. In case you decide on a houseplant instead, ProFlowers offers some of the cutest pots and planters for its plants (we’re swooning over this mini orchid and this vibrant azalea plant).

4. Terrain

Terrain, the greenery sister brand of Anthropologie, is our go-to pick for not only fresh plants and flowers, but also dried and faux foliage options (you know, just in case you don’t have a natural green thumb). Plus, Terrain has some of the most out-of-this-world beautiful flower and plant varieties that you won’t see elsewhere — we’re talking fresh anemone, rainbow ranunculus, string of pearls and large king protea stems.

As a more sustainable flower-sending option, The Bouqs Co. partners with eco-friendly farms that help minimize waste, recycle water and use sustainable growing practices — plus, all of Bouqs’ bouquets are designed by local artisan florists. Bouqs lets you shop by flower type (or plants!) or by occasion, and also offers a monthly flower subscription box that you can choose to either gift to someone or keep for yourself each month.

6. The Sill

Avid plant parents are going to want to check out The Sill’s Plant Parent Club, which gives you early access to the company’s newest plants, 10 percent off each purchase, free shipping and more. But if you’re not ready to go full-blown plant parent status, The Sill’s selection of à la carte houseplants is top-notch. Launched in 2012, The Sill was one of the first direct-to-consumer houseplant brands and is still known for its trendy plant options — from a calathea rattlesnake to a Hoya heart plant — which come in even chicer vessels.

Among its large selection of ready-to-ship bouquets, Urban Stems also has a collaboration with Vogue, which includes the most gorgeous (and unexpected) limited edition floral arrangements inspired by the latest runway trends and designs. And of course they all come in stunning vases, too. Not only does Urban Stems offer Insta-worthy plant and flower options like this dried arrangement that I’ve seen all over Instagram, you can tack on other gifts like Nest candles, Sugarfina candies and more for an extra surprise.
