As your collection of lip balms, scrubs and masks grow, you’ve probably come to realize that not all lip products are not made the same. Our skin changes in new environments, but, oftentimes, people forget that this also includes the moisture in our lips.

When my skin is dry, my lips are typically the first to let me know. And though the number of lip care products has increased over the years, these items don’t all penetrate your lips the same way. In fact, there are lip balms out there that dry out your smackers as you apply more. But there’s a reason why all of your lip balms aren’t doing what they’re supposed to.

One huge factor? The combination of ingredients. StyleCaster spoke with dermatologist Leslie Baumann, who explained that lip products with humectants (i.e., hyaluronic acid and glycerin) pull moisture out of the skin.

Humectants hold on to water, and occlusives keep it from evaporating,” Baumann told the website.

However, when occlusive ingredients like petrolatum, waxes, oils and silicones are paired with humectant ingredients, they make sure your lips aren’t drying out after application.

Take a peek at some of these lip-loving products that you can apply over and over without stripping your lips of the good stuff.
