Even if you’ve never actually heard the word “cannabidiol” before, you more-than-likely know and can recognize it by its acronym: CBD.

CBD is dispersed throughout the entire wellness industry, from body balms to dog treats. It’s the new go-to product for many common ailments such as variable levels of pain, sleeping issues, anxiety and more. It’s an ingredient that gets slapped onto skincare products, beauty brands and clothing fixtures — but is it even worth the hype?

Let’s start from the beginning: Cannabidiol is a “naturally occurring compound found in the resinous flower of cannabis, a plant with a rich history as a medicine going back thousands of years,” according to Project CBD’s website.

Before we proceed, I should address the elephant in the room: CBD does not give you the “high” that cannabis is famous for. That is tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as THC.

Both properties have significant therapeutic attributes, but they do two different things and yield different results. According to Project CBD, CBD has a range of benefits that have been backed by extensive scientific research. From autoimmune diseases such as inflammation and arthritis to skin diseases such as acne, dermatitis and psoriasis, CBD may really be a little holy-grail product in our beauty closet.
