Staying in has allowed for a lot of home improvement projects to shine. And though Americans have historically found them perplexing in other countries, bidet toilet seats and attachments have unexpectedly been selling out recently.

A bidet might be a more comfortable cleaning experience after using the bathroom. But according to Wirecutter, who spoke with Dr. John Swartzberg, a clinical professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, there are no studies that show bidets offer a more effective cleanse than toilet paper. “Use it if you want to," Dr. Swartzberg said. "Make sure the water is not too hot.” And if you do in fact have medical issues you're hoping to relieve, speak to your physician.

You can probably guess that due to the overall toilet paper shortage, some people are finding alternative ways to get their bathroom business done. Places like Bed Bath and Beyond have sold out of all their bidet products and some bestsellers from Home Depot are completely gone as well. However, you can rest assured there are still plenty in stock, as companies like Wayfair still have plenty of deals on bidets available.

A bidet, which is French for “small pony,” makes for a good paperless option if you want to nix toilet paper altogether. They use one-eighth of a gallon of water, whereas one roll of toilet paper can use up to 37 gallons of water.

Bidets though are also just more comfortable after doing the deed. According to Healthline, water can be gentler than wipes, especially for people who have just had surgery, given birth or who have irritable bowel syndrome. Plus, cleaning without toilet paper or wipes makes you less prone to rashes and infections. In other words, be nicer to your bum, and peep some of these top-rated bidet accessories.
