Police officer gives doctor medical masks instead of speeding ticket
A Minnesota state trooper moved a doctor to tears when he sent her off with medical masks instead of a speeding ticket.
Dr. Sarosh Ashraf Janjua, a Massachusetts-based cardiologist helping with coronavirus relief efforts in Minnesota, was driving to the hospital on March 21 when she was pulled over for speeding.
Upon seeing her license, the officer — Brian J. Schwartz — asked what she was doing all the way out in Minnesota, and she explained that she was there for work.
“He went back to his patrol car to look up my license, and when he returned, quite firmly told me it was very irresponsible of me to be speeding, especially since I would not only take up resources if I got into an accident, but would also not be in a position to help patients,” Janjua explained in a Facebook post.
Janjua fully expected to receive a ticket. However, instead of giving her a ticket, the officer let her off with a warning — and a gift.
“As I sputtered to apologize and say thank you, he reached in to hand me what I assumed was my license back. It wasn’t until my hand had closed around what he was giving me that its unexpected bulkiness drew my eyes to it: Five N95 masks, from the supply the state had given him for his protection,” she wrote.
When Janjua saw what the officer had handed her, she “burst into tears.”
“Like all healthcare workers and emergency responders around the world, I have felt afraid of not having adequate protective equipment, and in my darkest moments, have worried about what would happen if I fell sick far from home,” she explained. “This complete stranger, who owed me nothing and is more on the front lines than I am, shared his precious masks with me, without my even asking.”
Since Janjua shared her story online, strangers have flocked to the post to share their admiration for both her and Officer Schwartz.
“Thank you both for being great people! The world needs more of you,” one person wrote. “Your story literally brought me to tears, tears of [gratitude] and hope for the goodness of people,” another user commented.
Though the global pandemic has changed everyone’s lives, heartwarming acts of kindness like this is a reminder that when people work together, anything is possible.
