High school choir singers put on virtual a cappella performance after concert gets canceled

Not even quarantine can stop the Chino Hills High School Chamber Singers from performing.

Though the annual Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Choral Festival — slated for Wednesday, March 18 — was canceled in the wake of the global pandemic, members of the choir found a workaround. Using video conferencing software, the students synced up and managed to put on a brilliant a cappella rendition of “Over the Rainbow.”

“While the annual Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Choral Festival—originally scheduled for Wednesday, March 18—has been cancelled, our Chino Hills HS Chamber Singers demonstrated resilience by recording their individual a cappella portion of Over the Rainbow in their separate homes, and through technology were able to appear together as a family again,” the caption for the video reads. “Their harmonious performance was shared online for the CVUSD community with the goal of spreading hope and cheer during this difficult time.”

Since being posted to YouTube on March 17, the video has received more than 2,300 likes and upwards of 54,000 views.

On Twitter, people are sharing their support for the students and expressing their gratitude for the temporary distraction the video has given them.

“Thank you, you just made my day! Youth fill me with hope for the future!” one Twitter user wrote. Another simply responded, “Way to go, CVUSD!”

The Chino Hills HS Chamber Singers aren’t the only ones using technology to spread the sound of music. In response to the self-isolation that has swept the globe, vocalist James Sils even created the Sofa Singers, “a free online singing event” made up of 45-minute rehearsals.

Whether you’re interested in listening to music or making it, the internet is full of fun classes and videos that you can partake in or listen to — all from the comfort of your home.
