In 2007, Harlem native Teyana Taylor entered the mainstream when she appeared on MTV’s “Super Sweet 16,” a show that followed spoiled teenagers as they planned their 16th birthdays. At the time, Taylor had just signed a deal with Pharrell Williams’ Star Trak Entertainment imprint label but was probably better known for her outlandish requests on the reality show (she had a marching band, along with breakdancers, perform at her birthday venue — the New York Hall of Science).

Since then, however, Taylor has matured into a force of nature in the entertainment industry. In 2010, she split ways with Pharrell’s label and signed with rapper Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music, making an appearance on the latter’s critically-acclaimed album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.” Four years later, she released her debut studio album “VII,” which earned positive reviews from Complex and HipHop DX.

“With ‘VII,’ the now [then] 23-year-old Teyana Taylor has proven the following: She has a point of view, a sound, and as most of the tracks illustrate, a mood,” Complex’s Michael Arceneaux once wrote.

In 2018, the hip-hop and R&B artist followed up her debut — and a period of musical inactivity — with “K.T.S.E.,” which the Guardian’s Rachel Aroesti called “a record that melds new and old R&B with such flair.” The next year, the artist, who shares a 3-year-old daughter with professional basketball player Iman Shumpert, performed at the Red Bull Music Festival in New York, which featured “provocative stage design and mesmerizing choreography from a world-class team of dancers,” according to the festival’s website.

In an effort to better connect Taylor with her fans, Red Bull recently dropped a behind-the-scenes look at the artist’s 2019 live show with a documentary titled “Assembly Required: Teyana Taylor’s House of Petunia.” The hour-long film walks viewers through Taylor’s creative process as she also attempts to juggle motherhood. Perhaps, more importantly, it touches on her journey navigating a heavily male-dominated industry.
