Our 2019 Idea House Designer Shares Her Bed Essentials
When it comes to making beds, our 2019 Idea House designer Heather Chadduck Hillegas has perfected a no-fail, three step method that looks good anytime. Most importantly, Heather's quick method leaves no excuses for not putting your bedroom back together even on your busiest mornings.
Round Mirror
"Beds are usually placed against windowless walls, so a Federal-style mirror helps reflect light around the space," explains decorator Heather Chadduck Hillegas. The curvy shape of the mirror plays best off of square or rectangular shaped headboards. The one that Heather used here is actually an antique, but if you're looking for one to hang over your bed. Ballard Designs has nice looking, affordable, and light-weight options.
Bolster Pillows
Heather favors a single long round bolster over an assortment of thow pillows that often end up in piles on the floor. "My husband calls this my RPS (round pillow syndrome)," she says. "But pillows are typically rectangular, so a different shape is fun." The singular unusually shaped pillow maks a big impact all on its own. Follow Heather's lead and apply a less is more rule with round pillows -- too many on one bed can make the look pretty messy pretty quickly.

Simple Linens
"I like an easy-to-clean solid quilt or coverlet with matching shams, like this one from Dillard's," she says. The crisply ironed duvet and pillow cases add a "little bit of luxury." In the spirit of keeping things clean and simple, when you have a footboard on a bed like this handmade one from Dothan, Alabama-based Reid Classics, you don't need to bother with a bedskirt. Also, a bed skirt would have stolen some of the attention from the bed's canopy made from Heather Chadduck Textiles' own Grande Frond in olive.
