The red carpet is a tricky place to take fashion risks, even for the world’s most stylish women. And given that traditional suiting has dominated the black tie dress code for decades, it’s even trickier territory for Hollywood’s leading men.

But this is 2018! The year that A-list men across the worlds of film, music, and fashion proved they were ready to accept the challenge. They looked past the classic black tuxedo, towards eye-popping color and unconventional silhouettes.

Ezra Miller broke the mold on all sartorial fronts, emerging as a modern style icon in the making. Whether he was sporting a voluminous Moncler puffer, or rocking a Champagne flute as an accessory, the Fantastic Beasts actor embraced the fun in men’s fashion, creating moments that didn’t take themselves too seriously. Timothée Chalamet was an equally compelling red carpet contender. At just 22 years old, the actor has already cultivated a distinctive sense of style that is bold and brimming with personality (he has a penchant for printed suiting from Berluti and Haider Ackermann—and he impressively styles himself, FYI.)

Another unexpected winner this year? Actor Jeff Goldblum. A front-row fixture during the Fashion Month schedule, Goldblum tested out some of the buzziest designer looks of the moment, including the latest gear from Calvin Klein 205W39NYC. In his downtime, he’s also been snapped in straight-off-the-runway Prada pieces.

It's really no wonder these guys are stepping up to the plate, when you consider the daring new styles percolating on the runway. Emerging fashion brands, such as Palomo Spain and Gypsy Sport, have been instrumental in loosening up gender norms. Now fashion’s heaviest hitters are helping to move the conversation forward: With Alessandra Michele at the helm, Gucci continues to blur the lines between womenswear and menswear.

Musicians are playing their part in this movement, too, with style rebel Post Malone leading the charge. The American rapper has made sleazy-chic fashion his signature. Love them or hate them, his retro Nudie suits (sometimes embroidered with cigarettes) and bold accessories (he carried a red solo cup on the carpet!) have caused quite a stir on the red carpet. And let's not forget Migos. Band members Quavos, Offset, and Takeoff might as well be known as the three musketeers of OTT style. Remember when they wore matching sequined suits by Versace to the Met Gala?
