Earlier this evening, people all over Southern California momentarily believed they were witnessing a UFO flying across the state. But it turns out, aliens hadn’t made connection with Earth after all. Rather, Elon Musk’s aerospace manufacturing company SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket into Earth’s low-orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base, just north of Santa Barbara.

While SpaceX had been live-tweeting the launch, it seems a lot of people missed the memo and were completely taken aback by the bright light flying in Southern California — and prepared for certain doom at the hands of an alien invasion.

Naturally Southern Californians took to Twitter to share their thoughts about the SpaceX launch.

Many were relieved to learn that the bright light was actually a SpaceX launch and not a nuclear bomb or alien invasion, while others were not convinced that SpaceX was actually behind the spectacle. Celebrities like Chelsea Handler actually welcomed a potential alien invasion, while others like Demi Lovato were not here for the SpaceX launch explanation. She tweeted, “I’m calling bullshit on SpaceX’s excuse. That shit’s a UFO and there’s been others that have been seen that are just like it!!”

Soon, the jokes about the UFO sighting, or lack thereof, began rolling in with many poking fun at L.A.’s immediate panic and others claiming the rocket launch was actually Santa popping through Southern California a few days early. Even Elon Musk got in on the joke, trolling the confusion, tweeting,“It was definitely aliens.”

Here are just some of our favorite responses to the SpaceX launch:

So while the aliens may or may not have — and it seems they did not — arrived on Earth today, at least we’ll always have these hilariously panicked tweets to forever immortalize the SpaceX launch.
