Nothing is more recharging than an escape to the mountains. Crisp air, a fresh snow dusting, and a cinematic surround of majestic evergreen trees as far as the eye can see. If heaven is just beyond these heights, some of us might prefer to stay flat-footed in these summits (is there a hot chocolate as good as this past those pearly gates?). And if you do it right, the indoor accommodations can be as good for the soul as the dramatic views just beyond. “Mountain retreats are ultimately about the nature and surroundings that can be ideal for the active type but also just as cozy for staying in and enjoying the peace of the surrounding peaks,” says Joan Roca, CEO and founder of luxury travel concierge Essentialist.

When it comes to choosing the right location and property, Roca recommends that her clients consider their ultimate aim, whether it be an exciting ski vacation, a luxury getaway in the woods, or some well-deserved me-time at the spa followed by a cozy place to curl up by the fireplace. “We would advise location first, followed by amenities or activities available according to our member interests,” she explains. “It really depends on the season and interests, so for winter-sports enthusiasts, for example, looking at the level of ski options near the property.”

However you want to experience those rugged peaks, these 20 mountain resorts are a thrilling convergence of breathtaking scenery and world-class amenities that offer an indelible escape. From the majestic snow-covered peaks of the Swiss Alps, to the tranquil pools of Tibet to France’s world-class eateries, each resort on our list promises to be the mountain getaway you just might never leave. Happy booking!

Étoile du Nord, Val d’Isère, France

There’s a new kid (behemoth, rather) in the picturesque town of Val d’Isère. Étoile du Nord (“star of the north”) has been 10 years in the making, and it was well worth the wait. The impressive multibedroom chalets—located in an enclave known as Petite Alaska and accessible via a private tunneled entrance—feature a floor that lowers into a pool at the touch of a button and 23-foot windows with cinematic mountain views. The love-child of chalet interiors specialist Nicky Dobree (it’s her 50th chalet design) alongside AndArchitects, Étoile du Nord just won World’s Best New Ski Chalet 2023 in the World’s Ski Awards last month. “We understand that luxury means different things to different people,” the resort’s site reads. “Our chalets also allow clients to enjoy the privacy and atmosphere of a private home, coupled with a personalized service.” While the town’s unparalleled slopes and renowned restaurants are just a 10-minute walk away, there are a million reasons to never leave.

Omni Mount Washington Resort, Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

If your interest in powder doesn’t meet the level of die-hard ski fanatic, consider Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods. In the winter, it’s everything an eager slopes shredder dreams up. But in the spring, these 6,300-foot peaks (the highest in the Northeast) offer fresh powder at warmer temperatures. Beyond the slopes, escape back to the 1902 neo-Renaissance castlelike structure, built by 250 Italian artisans brought over to craft its beautiful plasterwork and Tiffany-style windows. “It was the most luxurious hotel of its day, and a fanciful one,” ELLE DECOR executive editor Ingrid Abramovitch tells us. Just a five- to six-hour drive from New York (weekend traffic dependent), she says it’s one of her favorite getaways both for its architecture and incredible setting. “Its snow-white, red-roofed facade is set against the magnificent backdrop of New Hampshire’s Presidential Range. There’s a fabulous lobby, a formal dining room, and even a Prohibition-era stone-walled speakeasy, the Cave. Says Abramovitch: “In winter, I love cross-country skiing on the hotel’s miles of groomed trails, and in summer, I’ll sit on the long outdoor terrace with a perfect view of the mountains.”
