This $20 Million Aspen Home Is Defined by Its Bold Angles and Cinematic Views
Starwood, a residential enclave about five scenic miles north of downtown Aspen, Colorado, is an idyllic and private Rocky Mountain paradise. John Denver not only once owned a home there, but he also wrote a song about it.
When plans to open a ski resort were scuttled in the late 1960s, the picturesque land was instead developed as a rural residential community for people who wanted a rustic and secluded mountain lifestyle with the added benefit of enhanced security and proximity to all that Aspen has to offer, including world-class skiing and a PJ-friendly airport. One of Aspen’s only gated communities, Starwood has its own fire department, on-call community managers to assist with property maintenance, and a 24-hour guarded gatehouse that will also accept delivery of packages.

Nestled into a high ridge and newly listed for $19.888 million, a modern residence designed in 1973 by architect Robin Molny, an apprentice of international legend Frank Lloyd Wright and local mandarin Fritz Benedict, defies the typical log cabin vernacular that defines much of the residential scene in Aspen. The listing is held by Steven Shane of Compass.
Described in marketing materials as “one of Aspen’s most iconic modern residences,” the nearly 6,900-square-foot home is a geometric assemblage of angles reflected in the unusual shape of rooms, asymmetrical thresholds, and pivoting doors.
The living room is triangular, as is the walk-in closet in the primary suite, and the kitchen is a unique six-sided space that’s open to the dining area. Windows are strategically placed throughout the house to frame painterly views of the majestic landscape at all times of the year, and in the fireside living room, a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass provides an epic cross-valley mountain view.
There’s a back kitchen for meal prep and coffee making; a spacious lower-level family room has a minimalist fireplace and a wet bar; and an additional recreation room is large enough to accommodate a pool table. Each of the six bedrooms has direct access to a bathroom, and there are a couple of additional powder rooms for guests.
A deep overhang creates a shaded patio outside the living room and alongside the long, slender swimming pool that has an integrated spa at one end. The elevated position allows for the exact sort of unobstructed 180-degree view that people come to Aspen to appreciate.
