20 Dark Strawberry Blonde Hair Looks We Love

Copper remains a popular hair color choice for 2024. As stunning as the vibrant reddish-orange shade is, it’s not the most low-maintenance, nor does it work well with all skin tones (though, it can be toned for a pretty stunning fit). Because of this, less vibrant red-toned hair colors are making their debut. In particular, dark strawberry blonde.  

“Usually, strawberry blonde hair is on the lighter side—typically a warm gold with a touch of red,” says Sally Hershberger senior stylist Jacob Schmidt. “When someone has a darker natural color, you can add a warm gold or pinkish glow to create a dark strawberry color.”

By darker, though, we don’t mean jet black or even rich brunette. “Dark strawberry blonde is characterized by a rich blend of copper red or copper-gold hues on a dark or medium blonde base,” clarifies colorist Richy Kandasamy, vice president of R+COLOR development and R+Co Collective Member. “It typically has a deeper level and more intense hue compared to traditional strawberry blonde.”

Ashy Dark Strawberry Blonde

Schmidt is a fan of Jessica Chastain’s ashy dark strawberry blonde hair color, seen here at the Paramount+ UK launch in 2022. He particularly likes the way it’s styled. “This style can be achieved by blowing out the hair with a dryer like the Shark FlexStyle ($250) and using the curling attachment to set the hair in a soft wave,” he reveals. “Finish with a light hold hairspray like Shu Uemura Moya Hold Finishing Hairspray ($43).”

Dark Strawberry Blonde Gloss

Sydney Sweeney may be best known for her baby blonde hair color, but at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards, she went with a dark strawberry blonde hue. “A great option for a blonde who wants to feel those slightly rosy copper tones, this can be done by glossing over highlights to create a warm copper feel without having to dye your whole head,” says celebrity hairstylist Rachel Bodt.

Golden Strawberry

Celebrity hair colorist Sharon Dorram points to Sarah Snook as a quintessential dark strawberry source of inspiration. The way she sees it, maintenance is everything when it comes to this hair color trend. “This color can be a difficult color to maintain depending on one’s natural base color,” she explains, noting that your initial hair health and the way you wash and style your hair also play a role. “The darker the strawberry the longer the color will hold. Always use products without sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, and stay away from aerosol hairsprays and mousse laden with alcohol as they strip the color.”

Classic Copper Blonde

Lindsay Lohan is another natural redhead who has switched up her hair color a time or two. For the Mean Girls premiere, she went red once more, opting for a dark strawberry hue bordering on classic copper. To get the look, Kandasamy says to “communicate that you want a dark strawberry blonde shade and share visual references of the shade you have in mind.”

Radiance-wise, it’s a bit more on the muted side—and it’s a hair color that Schmidt marvels over, especially when styled like so. “The middle part continues to trend, but I love to change it up with a side part for an elegant and classy look,” he says, applauding her style. “It’s a simple change that makes a huge difference.”

Pin-Straight Dark Strawberry Blonde Hair

Bella Thorne arrived at the Boss Fashion Show during Milan Fashion Week in September 2022 with sleek and straight dark strawberry blonde hair.

“I love a super sleek, pin-straight look,” Schmidt says, recommending her look for anyone hoping to lean into the dark strawberry blonde trend. “Use Sally Hershberger 24K Liquid Assets Daily Conditioning Remedy ($32) to tame frizz and enhance shine.”

Cherry Cola Strawberry Blonde

Zendaya’s reddish-brown hair color borders on the cherry cola hair color trend but hear us out. “You might not think of this when it comes to strawberry but this is a great option on a brunette as it has that super golden red copper tone,” Body explains. “This is an allover single process with a slightly lighter shade on the ends to reflect the light.”

Phoebe Dynevor is a natural redhead who went blonde and has since ventured back to the unique color category. “For those with darker hair, a deeper strawberry blonde [like Dynevor’s] can be achieved by adding a warm, golden tone,” Schmidt says. “This will result in a coppery hue.”

Adele’s 65th Grammy Awards hair borders between dimensional blonde and dark strawberry—and it’s a shade Schmidt loves, along with the big bouncy curls in which it’s styled. “To get extra bounce in your blowout, set in velcro rollers right after blow drying to add even more body,” he instructs.

Rose Gold Strawberry Strands

Dark strawberry blonde hair can lean pink, too. “This rose gold-toned is a fun approach to the classic strawberry blonde,” Schmidt says of Iskra Lawrence’s hair color. “Her hair is leaning towards pink rather than a reddish hue.”

Dirty Strawberry Blonde

Perhaps shockingly, Amy Adams is a natural blonde. To mimic her dimensional dirty strawberry blonde color, here, Kandasamy says to share the exact undertones you prefer, “whether you want more red, gold, or copper tones mixed with the blonde base.”

To recreate her color, you may have to transition your strands significantly. “If your natural hair color is significantly darker, ask about the process of pre-lightning/bleaching and how it will affect the final shade and end result,” Kandasamy says.

Dusty Strawberry

Sadie Sink has been a source of copper inspiration for years now. “Her slightly ‘dustier’, soft copper is so natural and lived in,” Body says. “Get this by glossing the whole head and then doing a super soft hair painting to create subtle dimension.”

Celebrity colorist and co-founder of IGK Hair Care, Chase Kusero, says to keep a color-depositing mask and a gloss treatment on hand. “I always recommend [IGK's] Expensive Clear Gloss Top Coat ($32) to my clients because it adds depth, dimension, and prism-like shine while also sealing the cuticle and preventing color fading,” he reveals. “If you've just transitioned from a darker color, I recommend going for a touch-up two or three months after having dyed it, and try not to wash your hair for at least three days after having dyed it, just so your hair can really absorb the red tones.”

Here’s another example of Emma Stone’s dark strawberry prowess. “This kind of copper has a little more of a shadowed root with a touch more golden brown that might feel a little more realistic for someone trying red on,” Bodt says.
