Today, they make cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, sour cream, butter and a new line of frozen meals. But if you have a sweet tooth, you'll be familiar with one of the company's other claims to fame: ice cream. Tillamook's delicious, creamy ice cream made with high-quality ingredients is a fan favorite and is available at many grocery stores.

About the Tillamook Ice Cream Company

Tillamook (full name: Tillamook County Creamery Association) is a farmer-owned co-op based in Tillamook, Oregon. The Tillamook creamery dates back more than 100 years, and the company began making ice cream in 1947. Today, in addition to ice cream, they also make cheese, yogurt, cream cheese spreads, sour cream, butter—and just recently began offering a limited selection of frozen meals.

The company focuses on high-quality ingredients, sustainable practices and supporting the community and the local farmers.

What Makes Tillamook Ice Cream So Good

You truly cannot go wrong no matter which flavor you pick, because Tillamook across the board is among the richest, creamiest and most delicious ice cream brands we’ve ever had. One of the adjectives most commonly used to describe their ice cream is “creamy,” and that’s definitely the first thing that comes to mind for us as well.

Their ice cream is also just sweet enough without being so overly sweet (like that of some competitors) that you feel like you’re on sugar overload. That’s likely due at least in part to the fact that Tillamook prioritizes high-quality ingredients and their ice cream isn’t packed with a bunch of artificial colors and flavors.

Here are our picks for the top Tillamook ice cream flavors, counting down to our favorite.

EDITORS' NOTE: We limited this ranking to our top 20 Tillamook flavors, so there are several others we didn’t include here. The company also makes limited-edition flavors like Tillamook Holiday Sugar Cookie and Tillamook Peppermint Bark, which are only around for a short time, so grab them while you can.

20. Tillamook Rocky Road

The ingredients found in Rocky Road ice cream can vary slightly from one brand to another. Tillamook puts mini marshmallows and almond pieces into the chocolate ice cream base. Obviously, you’re more likely to give this one a thumbs up if you like almonds—and, in fact, some reviewers have felt they could have gone a bit heavier on the almond component. We thought it was okay, but we liked many of their other flavors better.

19. Tillamook Chocolate Chip

There’s not anything we outright dislike about this chocolate chip flavor. In fact, we found it enjoyable. But its simplicity—just vanilla ice cream with tiny chocolate chips—means it has a subtle, understated flavor that gets outshined by the brand’s more interesting varieties.

18. Tillamook Old-Fashioned Vanilla

This is your traditional, classic vanilla flavor. It’s exactly what you expect from an old-fashioned vanilla ice cream (but better and creamier). The folks at Tillamook describe it as having a sweetness that might remind you slightly of marshmallow, and we can definitely see it.

While this flavor is fine just as it is, it also makes the perfect foundation for ice cream-based drinks or desserts, like milkshakes or sundaes. Both of the other vanilla varieties—Tillamook Vanilla Bean (which has a somewhat lighter feel and the tiny specs you often find in vanilla bean ice cream) and Tillamook French Vanilla (the thickest and creamiest of the vanilla offerings)—are also fine, but most people don’t find vanilla to be exciting enough on its own, so we don’t feel they stand out enough to warrant their own separate spot on our list.

17. Tillamook Udderly Chocolate

This variety has a can’t-miss blend of chocolate and “white chocolaty” ice cream as a base, with chocolate bits mixed in. The flavor is more understated than some of the other varieties, but the chocolate bits give it enough texture to make it interesting. Plus, we have to award a few bonus points for that excellent pun!

16. Tillamook Neapolitan Ice Cream

The Neapolitan flavor is a relative newcomer, added to the Tillamook lineup in March 2023. Neapolitan ice cream is a tricky thing: if you dislike any of the three flavors involved, you’re going to try to work around it, but on the other hand if you strongly prefer one flavor, you’ll be disappointed there isn’t more of it. For those who love chocolate, vanilla and strawberry ice cream equally, this is a great pick.

15. Tillamook Banana Split

Sometimes manufacturers of ice cream (and other foods) will call a particular variety a certain flavor that barely seems to have even the slightest essence of that actual taste. That’s not the case here, where Tillamook manages to perfectly capture the authentic flavor combination you would get with a real banana split. On the downside, this banana split formula combines several strong elements—vanilla and strawberry banana ice cream, plus walnuts, cherries and fudge ripple—and if you’re not a fan of any one of those components, that will probably make this whole thing a hard no for you. But for banana split fans who would prefer to do less work, this is a go.

14. Tillamook Chocolate

Chocolate ice cream is like the comfort food you always keep stashed in the freezer. It’s familiar, reliable, and almost always delicious. And as chocolate ice cream goes, this is one of the best around. We definitely wouldn’t turn it down, but just felt other flavors were more original and exciting.

13. Tillamook Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Those who like licking cookie dough off the spoon while they (or the baker in the house) are baking will want to devour this ice cream. Yes, it follows the standard formula of cookie dough ice cream infused with bits of chocolate and chunks of cookie dough, but each of those elements is done so well that this take on a standard flavor manages to stand out.

12. Tillamook Malted Moo Shake

Here’s another one that takes a standard base—this time, it’s vanilla ice cream—and again adds chocolate bits. The vanilla ice cream is malted, though, which makes it fresh and different. If you like malted milkshakes, you’ll probably love this ice cream. (Bonus pun points for this one, too.)

11. Tillamook Oregon Dark Cherry

We realize some people have a strong aversion to fruit-related ice cream flavors, in which case they may immediately write this flavor off without giving it a chance—but we think that would be a mistake. Granted, you must be a fan of cherries to like this treat, but the Oregon dark cherries give this a robust flavor that will wake up your taste buds. Plus, it’s an interesting change from strawberry, which seems to be the standard go-to fruit ice cream flavor.

10. Tillamook Mint Chocolate Chip

Mint chocolate chip—and mint in general—is one of those flavors that people seem to either love or hate. If you, like us, are among the “love it” crowd, then you will surely become an instant fan of this take on the flavor. It has just the right amount of brisk coolness thanks to the minty ice cream base, and the mini chips provide a pop of chocolate in every bite.

9. Tillamook Marionberry Pie

This flavor gets bonus points right off the bat for uniqueness, as we’re willing to bet this is one of the only marionberry ice creams you'll find in a major supermarket's freezer section. For those not fluent in fruit varieties, a marionberry is a blackberry hybrid that was developed in 1948 in Corvallis, Oregon. They're sweet and tart and have a slightly earthy flavor. Marionberry pie is the inspo for this treat, which means you'll get vanilla ice cream, pieces of pie crust, and rich Oregon marionberries that taste like they were just picked. We think this is one everyone should try at least once.

8. Tillamook Caramel Toffee Crunch

Those who like their ice cream packed with lots of stuff should give this flavor a try. The bits of toffee, pecans and almonds give it plenty of interesting textures and a powerful crunch in every bite. That’s all on top of the rich and creamy caramel ice cream base. It all adds up to one distinctive, delicious dessert.

7. Tillamook Cookies & Cream

Unlike some of the Tillamook flavors that seem to throw in an unexpected curveball, this is exactly what you’d expect: vanilla ice cream with chunks of cookie pieces. The crunch from the cookie bits add texture and make you feel like you’re enjoying two desserts in one.

6. Tillamook Monster Cookie 

Here’s another cookie-based flavor, but while the Cookies & Cream variety is familiar and predictable, this Monster Cookie is full of surprises. If you took a cookie packed with some of your favorite elements (peanut butter, chocolate bits, candies) and broke it up into pieces and mixed them all into a creamy cookie dough ice cream, the result would look something like this. It’s definitely not boring and has enough varied textures and flavors to make every spoonful a new adventure.

5. Tillamook Waffle Cone Swirl

If you like your ice cream in a waffle cone, this is one variety you’ll definitely want to try. It’s got chocolate and vanilla ice cream, a caramel swirl and crispy pieces of waffle cone. It’s the perfect blend of creamy and crunchy, and we found it irresistible.

4. Tillamook Peaches and Cream

This is what you might imagine you’d get if you created ice cream at home by hand using fresh, ripe peaches. Assuming, of course, you were a supremely talented and highly skilled ice cream maker because this is amazing. Most of the peach ice cream we try has an artificial flavor, but this one clearly is packed with real fruit. The combination of the peach pieces and the peach swirl is really something special.

3. Tillamook Caramel Swirl

We’ve seen some people say that caramel isn’t strong enough to stand on its own as an individual ice cream flavor. We're baffled by those people. In our book, caramel is plenty decadent and delicious enough all on its own—and especially when the folks at Tillamook give it their trademark creamy texture. We loved this just as it is, but if you want to take it up a notch, you could add chocolate sauce—or add a scoop to a slice of warm apple pie.

2. Tillamook Chocolate Peanut Butter

This variety has just two main components, but when the duo is peanut butter and chocolate that’s really all you need. As the catchphrase for an iconic candy that combines the same flavors says, these two great tastes taste great together. Once you try this flavor, you’ll want to keep it permanently stocked in your freezer.

1. Tillamook Mudslide

If you believe—as we do—that there’s no such thing as too much chocolate, this flavor was created just for you. It starts with chocolate ice cream, adds ribbons of fudge, and then throws in chocolaty chips as a bonus. It’s a chocolate lover’s delight and we loved every delectable bite.
