It is no surprise that bra tops are one item that has seen a huge revival. Since the reintroduction of ‘90s and Y2K-era trends across designer runways, bra tops have frequently been seen on the red carpet and perhaps, even more often, on the street by models, celebs, and influencers alike. There is no doubt that bra tops aren’t just having a moment, they are definitely here to stay as a closet staple. Thanks to their versatility, the best bra tops are all about function. Combining the qualities of two power players in every wardrobe, bra tops can provide coverage and support and be downright stylish, too.

“Bra tops are literally bras, that are tops,” bra fit expert Jenny Altman explains to Byrdie. “These are always a good idea since you're getting the function and coverage of a bra, with the colors and patterns you'd want in a top.” Considering there are so many playful, thoughtfully designed styles on the market today, she encourages you to dare to bare. “These are not your mom's nude bras that are meant to stay hidden. These are bras to be seen!” she explains.

From sexy cut-out shapes to romantic lace bralettes and even everyday sports options, our two experts have your needs covered, with their tried and true picks and all the reasons why. Below, find the 15 best bra tops that are both fashionable and supportive.

Comfort comes first, so try testing out styles that have notably soft fabrics, such as Alo Yoga’s Alosoft Show Stopper Bra, Lululemon’s Align Asymmetrical Bra, and TnAction’s TnaBUTTER™ Halter Bra Top. Texture is also important to add a bit of interest, such as the trending ribbed styles like Aerie’s Seamless High Neck Bra or lace options, like Free People’s Everyday Lace Longline Bralette and Fleur du Mal’s Bouquet Lace Bustier Top, which are perfect for layering under (and even over) other garments.

What to Look for in Bra Tops

Fit

“The key to finding the best top for you, is to make sure your bust is supported, hence the name bra top,” Yerry says. “In regards to bustiers, the key factor is to know your cup and underbust size.” She suggests trial by error, if you don’t truly know your true size, and also because every brand is different. “Try out a few different sizes! With my clients, I know first hand that this is something that is a huge game changer.”

Altman agrees that fit is always the most important part when choosing a bra top. “Whether you like a barely-there bra or need support for larger breasts, a bra that fits you well means you'll look good and feel good and confidence is the best way to look good,” she explains. A good fit means taking into account both the band, since if it is too loose it will ride up or too tight will leave a mark. “You want a firm fit that lets you breathe,” she says.

Altman also recommends taking into account the fit of the cup. “You don't want any room in the cup, but you also don't want to billow over the cup,” she adds. “Size and fabric is important here since stretchy fabrics will flex with your breast size, even if it's the week of your period.” Be sure to test out numerous styles to find the one that fits you best in both of these departments.

Fabric

“Fabric is important, and for summer, you want breathable fabrics,” Altman says. “Also important is good separation between the breasts, without that you'll have a whole lot of summer sweat.” Technical fabrics, like those found in stretchy knits or sports bra styles will help prevent extra sweat, no matter the season, but crisp cottons can also be extremely fashionable and functional.

No matter what size you are for this certain type of top, Yerry always recommends a thick fabric. “It will support and also cover the nipple, if that’s something you even care about,” she says.“If you are searching for something movable, for instance stretchy fabric, definitely try out a few different sizes whether you are in store or shopping online,” she notes. “It’s actually quite shocking what you will find when you don’t limit yourself.”

Style

“Style may be as important as fit, since bra tops are meant to be seen,” Altman says. “The good news is there are so many styles to match your outfits this summer, so pick the strap type you want and go from there.” Just remember, bra tops don’t need to be reserved for just summer either. Try some of the layering techniques our experts called out for different seasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any do’s and don’ts for wearing bra tops?

Altman says there are no rules. “Wear the bra top you want to wear!” she says. “If you're in a school or formal work environment, it's best to keep the dress code in mind as bras are not tops in those places but gauge what's right for your environment.” She also reiterates the importance of fit. “If your bra top is a good fit, you'll look great wearing it,” she explains. “If it's not a good fit, or you truly need more support than the bra top of choice offers you, wear your bra underneath it so you get the cute look with the breast support.” Yerry prefers to follow a certain styling formula. “I don’t like when there is too much skin showing, so I think it’s best to pair with something high-waisted,” she explains. “If you are into the low-rise trend, add something over it to level it all out.”

How can you wear a bra top for both day and night?

“For the day, wear with a pair of your favorite high-waisted bottoms and easily transform your look to night with a blazer or a statement jacket,” Yerry says. “Another option is to pop on a sheer shirt for a sexy yet put-together moment. Jewelry will also take your look to the next level for night.” Altman also loves the versatility of a bra top when it comes to styling. “A bra top with jean overalls or jean shorts in the day goes perfectly into a bra top with a summer suit or matching top and shorts in the evening or under a cropped blazer, and of course, with leggings."
