20 '70s Hairstyles That Feel Chic and Modern

When it comes to aspirational lengths, there's just something about '70s haircuts. From the iconic Farrah Fawcett blowout to the voluminous disco Afro, the decade is virtually unmatched in birthing legendary hairstyles. It's no wonder that over 50 years later, we continue to see these styles everywhere. "The '70s were iconic," says Adir Abergel, celebrity hairstylist and Virtue creative director. "Timeless!" agrees fellow pro and founder of Rôz Haircare Mara Roszak, adding: "[They] really show off things like layers and bangs, which are so popular now."

Below, Abergel and Roszak break down their favorite '70s haircuts to copy and provide plenty of tips and tricks for how to style them.

The Shag

Abergel points to the shag as one of the hairstyles that defined the '70s. Here, Miley Cyrus wears hers in a platinum blonde shade with brow-grazing bangs for a rocker chic look.

The Voluminous Afro

If you want to wear your natural curls out, make like Solange Knowles with a '70s classic: The Afro. "This style is amazing because you can create any shape you want through both your cut and how much you pick out your curls," says Abergel. "Keeping your hair healthy with the right wash and conditioning products is what it's all about with this style."

Brow-Grazing Bangs

Roszak loves brow-grazing bangs like Billie Eilish's if you're opting to go '70s with your look. She recommends using a nourishing hair oil like her Rôz Santa Lucia Styling oil on the bangs to keep them smooth and for added shine.

The Sleek Center Part

Long, pin-straight hair with a middle part is an easy go-to '70s haircut to give you that disco vibe. "This is all about the [flat] iron and using heat protectant," says Abergel. He recommends using a combination of Virtue’s 6-in- 1 Styler and Healing Oil to protect hair and give it extra shine.

The Farrah Fawcett Flip

Farrah Fawcett's layered feathered blowout will forever sit in the pantheon of most influential beauty looks of all time. To get this look yourself, Abergel says to start with a mousse or volumizing spray on damp hair to add maximum volume. Then, use a round brush, brushing hair away from the face as you blow dry it.

Tips

Use a few hot rollers, rolling hair away from the face and letting it set while it cools down. Once you take out the rollers, brush away to get that feathered look.

Hip-Grazing Hair

Naomi Campbell's middle part is sleek and perfectly divides her long straight hair. To find your middle part, Abergel says to use the bridge of your nose as your guide. Align the point of your rat tail comb to that bridge and you'll find your middle part.

Disco Curls

Zendaya's spirals are full and voluminous with a hint of copper that's just stunning. She adds bangs to amp up the drama on her look.

Lived-In Waves

If you're looking to add a bit of volume to your long, straight hair with a middle part, take a cue from Kim Kardashian and add some texture to your hair. Slight waves give it a more effortless look.

The Timeless Shag

Another great example of the '70s shag, says Abergel, is icon Jane Fonda. Yes, even through today! Here, she wears her layers sleek into a rounded lob with curtain bangs and a cool shade of silver.

The Flipped Blowout

Roszak appreciates a layered flipped blowout as seen here on Bebe Rexha. She says to dry hair as you normally would with a blowout, then add in rollers for extra bounce at the ends. Once rollers are removed, she says to apply a volume powder at the roots for a lift and then gently tease and brush out.

Rapunzel Locs

Rapunzel-length locs are a protective style that helped define the '70s. As seen on Ciara here, the style is striking and showcases the face beautifully. Abergel notes you'll want to show your scalp some extra TLC to ensure lengths stay strong and thick.

Ethereal Spirals

Big and lush, Gerber's cloud of curls are extra ethereal. Add fun jewels and pearls to really dress up the look.

Boho Braids

Leave it to Zoë Kravitz to serve up a boho-inflected protective style. Here, Kravitz wears micro braids woven with thin locs for an effortless '70s look.

The Groovy High Pony

If you're looking for a fun updo that jives with the '70s vibe, you can't go wrong with a high pony. Arguably the queen of this hairstyle, Grande gathers her long strands at the top of her head and leaves a single tendril out to frame her face.

The Curly Shag

Curly shags are a quintessential '70s look. Sandra Oh wears hers in a lob with fringe bangs and hazelnut highlights that add definition to her spirals.

Sideswept Disco Curls

For the ultimate party girl look, turn to Hadid's fuzzy and buoyant disco curls. Sweep hair into a deep side part for added volume.

The Bombshell Blowout

Abergel says you'll want to set your hair in a way that's still moveable while styling curls into a '70s haircut like Ross' voluminous Afro. For a lasting style, he says to respect the cool down. "One you curl or straighten [hair], you want to allow the hair to completely cool in the shape you're creating to finishing molding it into its new formation," he says.

The Pineapple Updo

To pull your coils back in soft, sultry fashion, opt for a pineapple updo. Simply gather curls and secure at the top of your head, and leave some pieces out like Shahidi for an effortless look.
