ABOUT THIS BEFORE & AFTER

PROJECT TYPE: Bedroom

STYLE: Colorful

SKILL LEVEL: DIY

For some, a calm and peaceful sleep space means muted colors, minimalist furniture, and an overall light and airy vibe to the room. Others prefer a bright, bold, expressive bedroom. For artist Cass Danson (@our.home.le.fleur), who converted her new-build home using tons of colors, that latter style spoke to her the most.

Before putting her own spin on it, Cass’s bedroom “was just very basic: white walls, sheers, and carpet,” she explains. “Not a lot of warmth or color was in the room.”

The rainbow headboard sparked a color-packed redesign.

Cass says the room redo all really started with the eye-catching headboard, which certainly gives the space some curve appeal.

She spotted the headboard while shopping at The Family Love Tree, a Melbourne-based retro furniture store, and immediately fell in love. “The second I saw it, I had a vision!” she says. “I really wanted to bring fun and color into the space with a slight retro vibe.”

Cass says she used the headboard as a basis for the yellow, green, and pink color scheme in the room.

The bedroom has tons of pattern play.

Each area in the room is different from the next, making the space a true feast for the eyes. From the bold rugs (a Keith Haring one during the makeover, and an orange floral one after) to the yellow striped accent wall, the bedroom is a pattern playground.

Although she’s a seasoned DIYer, this was Cass’ first time painting this striped pattern. “Measuring out and taping up the wall to paint the stripes was certainly the hardest and most time-consuming part,” she says. Cass used Dulux’s Golden Sand for the accent wall.

The hardest part was landing on the green paint.

For the wall behind the bed, landing on the right color (Dulux’s Plantain) was a little trickier. “I’ve been trying to find the perfect color for our master bedroom forever now, and I think I’ve nailed it with this,” she wrote of the bedroom in an Instagram caption. She adds that even this lime green has some warmth to it. “I knew I wanted to do green but needed to find that perfect undertone,” she says.

“All the colors are not overwhelming as we chose warm colors for the space,” she adds. She ended up using the in-home gallery feature on the Dulux website to help decide if the color would suit, and it worked out perfectly.

In the end, Cass was able to do both paint projects for $300 AUD (around $198 USD), and she couldn’t be happier with the results: “What I love about the after is how cozy and warm our bedroom feels,” she says. “At night with the wall lights on, it feels super calming in this space.”
