Local authorities responded to concerns that two dogs died, possibly after exposure to a mysterious powder on the Atlanta BeltLine. Rumors circulated on social media about the incident, and some locals also received notices from their apartment complexes to avoid walking their dogs near the area.

Residents Worry After Rumors Say 2 Dogs Died From Exposure to Toxic Powder

The Atlanta BeltLine is a pedestrian pathway that cuts through the city of Atlanta. Multiple BeltLine trails connect the city. Along the route, commuters can enjoy shopping, food, and social gatherings. People on the BeltLine often enjoy the Southern weather and recreation with their canine friends.

Earlier this week, however, residents and locals received word of suspicious activity that they assumed resulted in the death of two dogs.

“Dear Dog Owners,” one email from an apartment association manager begins. “Please avoid walking your dog on the beltline right now. It has been reported a group of unknown people are putting out a toxic substance on the sidewalks. That has killed two dogs in the Inman Park Area today.”

Later, the email was widely circulated on Instagram. The social media circulation further added to the concern.

Authorities Weigh In on Mystery Powder

Wednesday morning, officials from the Atlanta Police Department arrived to test the unknown powder. In a statement from the APD, officers responded to the 700 block of Corduroy Lane near Inman Park. After testing, they determined the powder was bleached flour.

While flour is non-toxic to dogs, baking soda, baking powder, and cream of tartar could be mistaken for flour. These white powders can cause irritation and shortness of breath if inhaled by pets.

Police reassured residents that the bleached flour found on the path is non-toxic. A running club used the flour to mark the route for an upcoming event.

Channel 2 Action News has not been able to verify any dog fatalities.
